Hi all, Im about to buy a new lappy with the intel 4965AGN card, Im wondering what wifi router to go with it. It will mostly be used over short distances but streaming HD movies and large files between computers so id prefer greater speed over further distance.

I'm not qualified to offer advice on "best" router, but being that we just got a laptop with the Intel 4965AGN card, as well, and my needing a wireless router, I can tell you what worked *great* for us. I bought a D-Link DIR655. Setup was extremely easy. My wired desktop computers work beautifully with it and now the laptop works beautifully with it from another room, with several walls in between, and even upstairs. You might want to read a few reviews that specifically address speed, but my recollection was that the reviews were very good for this router. I can only confirm that it works great with the 4965AGN card.

    Matt,

Based on all the reviews that I have read, I just bought the DIR-655 router for an install at a large house. Haven't had a chance to open the box and get started with it, yet, but it sounds terrific, and if you click on Granny's link and click on the Firmware link on the right, you'll see that there is a firmware update available to update the router to Draft 2.0 status, which was a huge plus for me. Well, that along with Gigabit ethernet ports.

I think all of the new router should now have 1000/100/10BaseT ports. Most all pc these day have a gigE port. If not I would not consider it. But I do not use a wireless router. I use a wired with a AP. Better performance.

I'm still waiting for more Draft-N routers to show up. The type I'm looking for is specific and from my knowledge, not made yet. Oh for reference, I have the 4965AGN as well.

Basically I want a Draft-N 2.0 router that supports 2.4GHz & 5GHz, which means it is dual band... which means it should also support 802.11a. In addition, it should be capable of running DD-Wrt or any of those third party firmware... basically Linux based. And lastly have Gig-E support.

So far from what I've seen, the closest one is one by Buffalo, WZR-AG300NH, it supports dual band N/B/G and A, so 2.4 and 5GHz spectrum. Has Gig-E but unfortunately does not seem to run Linux.

It seems that most Draft-N routers only use the 2.4GHz spectrum. :( Having 2.4GHz & 5GHz would be great, that way I could use 5GHz spectrum and not have to worry about dropped signal. All the other WiFi in my area is 2.4GHz, B/G. Oh and 2.4GHz phones that neighbors use... thats what usually makes me drop signal.

    edit:
Hmm did some perusing on Chinese and Japanese websites, looks like Buffalo just recently released a new Dual Band router, model is WZR-AMPG300NH. Currently only available in Japan for about $250. Wonder how long before it makes it way over to the US.

    Lyshen,

Keep your eyes open for this one coming from D-Link. Has all the features of the DIR-655, which is being touted as one of the best Draft N routers out there, but also does Dual Band. Since there is a firmware update for the 655 to update to Draft N 2.0, I would assume the 855 would already come updated to 2.0.
