I am new to Wireless networking. I have a Cable Modem plus a desktop at home and I am in the process of buying a laptop.

I don't know which router to get...I heard good reviews for D-Link 624($80) that it's easy to install and gets good connections. I also heard that Belkin Pre-N ($120) routers are great and also easy to install.

    What are your opinions? Thanks.

Well, I just got my first laptop and don't know anything about computers. I just went to Radioshack and bought some Linksys router for $60 (after a $10 mail in rebate). Even with what little I know about computers I managed to hook it up (I'm actually using it right now[ :D]. It also seems to work great everywhere in the house. So, just my opinion, I'd say go see if they have the same thing at a Radioshack by you. It's cheap and seems to be good. Of course, someone with a little more knowlege might end up telling you why NOT to get it, so maybe you should weight for them!

Please don't waste your money on a pre-n product. You don't have pre-n in your machine, so you'd have to buy a card that sticks out, ACK.

I rally like the Netgear brand. They have $40 in rebates on their B/G routers right now and best Buy is giving a $15 gift card away as well. This was valid last weekend, not sure if it's still going on.

I have the D-Link 624 and it works great, easy config, and easy setup (security takes a little bit longer). But you can have it connected and use it pretty much instantly. It kind of depends on what kind of card you use, internal/external (my internal is a little weaker actually) but the signal has pretty good coverage. The router is in my basement and still reaches everything inside, and even outside. If you were buy the matching D-link card for your computer you would have no problem at all (assumeing everything works), and 108 mps transfer.

    Thanks everyone.

I am not planning to get a wireless card for my laptop since it comes wire wireless lan installed. I assume if you do, you would get a better connectivity but my apt is not really that big so I don't know if it's worth.

I guess I will stop by Best Buy or Circuit City to see what's the best deal.

I have the 624 and its great. I have never had a problem or has it ever dropped a signal. Bought them at Best Buy for like $80 after rebate.

Linksys routers are ok--their wireless cards are aweful. I went through 5 Linksys cards before I bought D-Link. What a nightmare that was.

If recollection serves me correctly, Pre-N are the "n" routers that are out before the "n" is standardized. Just some companies trying to get on the next bandwagon before its fashionable

Personnaly I prefer Cisco-Linksys products over any other brand. But this is just me. They do work fine for me, so I just stick to them when I need something network related.
