Right now this is all im looking for, to spend about 50$ for a wireless router that is RELIABLE. something that doesn't drop me for no reason. distance isn't a big issue, it's for home, so ill always be atleast like 20 feet away from it.

as for speed, right now it's all gonna be the same, unless i plan on changing my wireless card, 54mbps is good enough for a router.

just throw out whatevers on your mind, just be sure to include the brand name and model #, thanks!

Spend a little more for the WRT54GL, which is usually only available from Newegg/etc rather than locally, or better yet a Buffalo WHR-G125 that's a little cheaper and is stocked by Best Buy/etc. They both support the DD-WRT firmware project. Flash in DD-WRT and that should fix your problem. Linux-based firmware is extremely reliable.

The WRT54G has too little memory to properly run DD-WRT. It's not Linux-based so it's not as reliable.

Well I have been running the latest Linksys firmware on my WRT54GS and I have not had any problems with it.

Linux firmware is not necessarily better, although it does give you more customization options.

The buffalo is the better router over the Linksys WRT54G, and if you move up $10 you can the WRT54GL or the Buffalo WHR-HP-54G which either one of these will take the dd-wrt firmware.

If your running BT or gaming you really need to move to a router that can take the abuse. Other wise you may still have problems. The buffalo in my opion is a better router. The last Linksys (wrt54gs v7) that I set up was total junk. Does what your trying to get away from, locks up constantly.

If you are willing to increase your budget to $60, Circuit City has the Buffalo WHR-HP-54G on sale right now for $59.99. When I asked a similar question, this is the router I was steered towards this router and I was told to upgrade the firmware to the tomato firmware. By doing so, it was very easy to completely secure my network.

i'm running a trend-net TEW-431BRP that i bought at fry's for 39 dollars. it was the least expensive wireless router in the store.

using it for several years now and it has and still works perfectly.

feel free to pay 2x, 3x, ... what i paid
