It's the first time i use Atheros chip and the utility that comes with it.

I must admit that it's quite informative however I'm struggling to see where it has the security/encryption information for each of the scanned networks.

With intel proset or win xp software you just double click on the network name and the password field comes up.

With atheros utility i find that you have to to tell the software if the encryption is WAP, WEP etc...so if you don't know what kind of encryption the scanned network has it's a bit of trial and error...

Am i missing something obvious or the atheros utility has a drawback?

    thanks

What operating system do you have? What wireless card do you have? What version of the utility do you have? Where did you get the software/drivers?

    the wifi card is AR5007EG...

as far as i can tell the problem is with the software and not the chipset itself...

No, I believe that is the Atheros chipset. I'm looking for the make and model of the wifi card (like the Intel 4965 or the D-Link DWA-643).

well...as far as i can see this is the model of the chipset which is the same as the intel chipset...it is not an external wireless card...

Why not just ditch the Atheros Client and use Windows built-in Wireless Zero Config.

I understand that the card is internal. However, the card will still have a model. Atheros only makes chipsets, they don't make the card. For example, I have an Atheros 5008 chipset on my wifi card, but it was manufactured by SparkLAN and is the WPEA-124N.

Go to your laptop manufacturer's website and check your model - it should list the wifi card somewhere.

It doesn't matter who slapped the PCB together - the software won't know the difference.

If the Atheros software is giving you problems, you could use Windows connection manager instead.

I want to know the make and model, so I can research what Atheros utility is shipped with the laptop. Since Atheros doesn't provide drivers to the public (unless you visit atheros.cz - and that's an unofficial site for drivers only, no WZC utility), it would definitely help troubleshooting this problem if the OP provided a link or more detailed information about the make/model of the wifi card.
