I have an Atheros 5007EG half-card in my 10" Acer, and an Intel 5100 in my Dell Studio 1737.

Which would be better suited for the netbook in terms of battery life and range?

 I politely disagree. I've had 2-fustrating experiences find drivers for atheros cards. Also the atheros card in my brothers IBM R60 will not work(CODE 10) and IBM won't let you swap wireless cards in that notrbook.

Oh well I put the Intell 5100 into the netbook. Now I have Draft-N support. I'll eventually upgrade the 1737 to a better wireless card.
