My scenario is this, I have a wireless router which is connected to an external HDD and a desktop PC both via cables then we have both mine and my girlfriends laptop wirelessly connected.

When I first set the network up on this laptop everything worked well with access to the HDD and internet working flawlessly. I couldn't see my girlfriends mac book but she could see me and I never knew whether or not I could see the desktop as I hadn't turned it on yet.

Now I just switched the HDD on to access it and it doesn't show up....instead I get an icon for Microsoft Publication Service (which links to a website for windows live, which I don't want). Now not only can't I get rid of this icon I can't access the HDD (although I can FTP to it).

I also wouldn't mind seeing my girlfriends mac but it's not essential, same goes for the desktop (whiich BTW is on XP), the priority is the HDD.

    Any ideas?

Networks can be a real pain in the *** sometimes. IMO wires and wireless have trouble playing nice.

Start by rebuilding your network one connection at a time and see if it's working. Make sure all the settings are okay with regards to firewalls and stuff like that. Start easy with the wire connection to the desktop and the HDD. Then the laptops.

Thats what I did when my wireless network didn't play nice when connected to my wired network. I had a wireless router and a wire router connected to each other. It was hassle though. In the end I dumped the whole wireless thing and went all wires again. Much less connection errors and less of a security risc.

Yeah I figured as much, what a pain. what gets me is that is WAS working and now isn't. And whats all this Microsoft Publication Service malarky about. I can't get rid or anything.

Have your tried rebooting every thing in order?
Router, pc1, check connection to HD,
    Pc2, check connection to HD & pc1
    etc.....

As for MS Pub, kill the service, it you do not need it.

Ok this is really bugging me now. I've rebooted all in order, turned the firewalls off etc and still no joy.

The thing is my laptop used to see the HDD no trouble......now it can't. It also never had this MS publication Service icon either.

Can someone please enlighten me on how I get rid of that?

The service should be listed in administrative tools-> services from the program list. Find the service and disable it and/or set to Manual instead of auto.
