This has been an issue for me. It is between usable or not usable, nothing to do with power saving bla bla.

The place i am having regular meeting has 3.5G signal (3 to 4 bars), showing HSPA when connected, but it is completely unusable. 2G works (EDGE) but ping is high 300-600ms.
This could be due to the location is just beyond the reach of data through 3.5G. No single handphone among so many colleagues that manage to get data through HSPA.
To get 3.5G to truely work, i need to move some distance away.

Dell built in modem cannot choose to disable HSPA and keep regular 3G. It is either 2G or 3G. I tried to play along with WCDMA I,II,V,VIII but it is about the frequency band not about the data bandwidth. (My place is WCDMA I and VIII)

When i use Huawei USB modem, when it is connected at 3G, LED in dark blue, the ping is perfectly fine at 200ms. Once I started to browse, the LED switched colour to Light Blue, indication of 3.5G kicks in, the line becomes completely unusable, ping no response.

I can confirm that if there is method to force regular 3G 384kbps instead of the 3.5G at 3600/7200kbps, internet will work at that location. Is there a software that can control it?

    Thank you.

As far as I am taught and I know... it's automatic, and cannot be forced :/

Yeah I think so too- never seen an option to force one or another on any device.

Feeding the modem some AT commands might help. That of course requires that your modem can be configured as a traditional modem in windows. Then you can add some AT commands to be run everytime you connect.

List of AT commands « shapeshifter.se

Actual usable commands vary by make/model of the modem itself.

Or you could call your operator and explain the problem, then they could remotely reboot the access point which apparently has crashed. That has happened to me before. :)

It's possible but moving from 3,5 to 3G it's automatically changed. Of course you can force to stay on HSPA. You can only switch between GSM and 3G and also choose frequency range. If you have many 3G transmitters near you, then this method could help.
