just stumbled on bcm94360hmb on ebay, it is pretty much the only 3 antenna wireless AC and it is supposed to be compatible with older laptops, ivybridge/sandybridge and older.

    any one tried it ?

This is only half the answer but yes, this card has been discussed in this very sub-forum. The missing half is that I don't remember which thread and I can't look for it right now, sorry. But it was mentioned.

A question addressed at no one in particular - why the hell have I not bothered to buy it so far? :(

EDIT: BTW connectors on that Broadcom are MHF4 not U.FL so you need to replace the antennas.

Wouldn't insertion loss be an issue with adapters?

Whatever theoretical loss one might consider does not effect the use of this device in practice. I received it yesterday, popped it into my Clevo P150SM-A running OSX 10.11.6 and it worked flawlessly. On 5G, two rooms away (30+ ft and 3 walls) from the AP it runs nearly as fast as my wired connection. The adapters are small and I was able to tuck them neatly in a pocket under my keyboard after heat-shrinking the U.FL to MHF4 connection. I didn't take a pic, but it fairly obvious where the wires should go on this PC.

The only real difficulty with this installing is finding the Windows driver. Both Ubuntu and Mac OSX run this card OOB, but not windows...
