    Got an old desktop lying around? If so, you can basically make the same thing for nothing more than the cost of any additional hard drives you want to add on.

    That's true but the vault has many automated tasks so you don't have to care about, it works in the background for you, you don't have to get worry about backup scheduling, transferring data manually, etc.

    Thanks for the info... Don't have an old CPU or I would consider that. Are there any 'top rated' NAS devices that anyone can recommend? I just found the Media Vault by HP and it looked like what I was looking for. I'm open to suggestions though.
