people generally call it Hamachi well the free once at least... which is all u need.

its used widely to play lan games over the net. Spec War3 DOTA'

as of my last use afue versions old i had to do quite abit of fiddling and research to get it working with vista.... but it worked 100% in the end.

I've used it many times for work. It is pretty awesome. You create an account and can set it to remember many computers at various locations. It is very handy.

Yup. Use the Free version, and it works great! That's what I use to administer my Mom's machine back on the east coast.

Last I checked, it was called Hamachi (isn't LogMeIn the company that bought it or something?)

And yeah, I've used it for a long time, at home to play games, and at work to get access to our servers externally.

    Works great

I had a laptop that had a busted video card. I could not output any display. I wanted to get files off of it, onto an external HDD. I used logmein to connect to it and see the machine on another laptop to try to fix it. It was very cool indeed.

    Very cool indeed :D

That's why I keep Logmein as a Startup app, you never know when you might need it. Logmein has also saved me a couple of times.

Similar use here to help my 87-yr old mother-in-law in another country when she has problems with her laptop.

Does it have any problems with DHCP? Does it use the standard Windows Remote Desktop Client (my networks kind of restrict others a little bit...its a pain to get it working with other tools)?

No problems I've noticed. I've got DSL here and my Mom has dial-up and I've never had a problem connecting.

No. Uses it's own remote desktop software. Runs an app on the server side, and you use a web browser (I've used both IE 7 and Firefox 2) on the client side through the LogMeIn website

How well does that run in comparison to Windows Remote Desktop? Does it support odd key combos, audio, FTP (I'm assuming yes here). How secure is it???

    Very well.

    Not that I've tested.

    Not in the Free version.

    Yes. Called File Share.

    It's 128 to 256 bit SSL encrypted.

    Check out the FAQ.

    Interesting...here is one more.

I was browsing their site, and I found not only LogMeIn, but LogMeIn Hamachi...all that does is set up the VPN.

So there are two products that work for me:
1 - LogMeIn Free) Does the connectivity and the remote control in the same app.
2 - LogMeIn Hamachi) Does just the networking, leaves the remote control up to me (aka Windows Remote Desktop Connection).

I'm kind of in favor of using app #2 (Hamachi). We know that #1 is encrypted, is #2 encrypted?

I used Hamachi to connect to my desktop today, worked immediately out of the box with Windows Remote Desktop Connection. I like that a lot, since Purdue's VPN continually shows us all how worthless Purdue IT is!

Networks generally are not fast enough for remote video gaming and playing. In theory you can do it...but the internet just isn't fast enough.

LogMeIn Hamachi. is what we use here, it connects our hotels together so managers can work on things at home, and it has a built in IM type program so we can chat. It seems to be a good program/product.
