Is the win Vista FW adequate? At home and work I use WPA with MAC filters so have never bothered with any third party firewall but I wonder if I need one at cafes, free hotel networks, etc [in Europe]?

I would always use a software firewall other than MS. If they new how to code their OS it would not be needed. Using MS firewall is like using a fox to guard the hen house.

I use Comodo FW it is free and works very well with little overhead. I would stay away from Synantic, uses 1/2 of your resources and causes other problems.

Thanks. Just installed it. Seems to be easy to configure. I had hell earlier with Zone Alarm to set it to work well with my home & office networks.

BTW - do FWs slow down internet speed? My immediate impression is that pages seem to take a bit longer to load.

Normally not, but can if you have it set to paranoid mode. It all depends on where you visit. At first it can be till it learns what programs you allow for access.

With FW and AV they are looking for signatures so depending on the speed of the PC so it can a little. A small price to pay to keep your pc clean. If you connect to your work sites you can add a rule to allow all, and not check. But I prefer not to do this, because if your company allow nb to go back and forth their system can be infected.

I didn't like using the free ZoneAlarm firewall, and had serious issues with Comodo, but like and use the commercial ZoneAlarm firewall.

The new comodo has some settings to get rid of all of the prompts or info as it learns. Mine after being installed for a week started working at full speed. The older v2.4 has a scan feature that speeds up the process. I started to backup to the older version, but once the learning process has completed it has been no problems. You can also turn of the Defense + features, this is the process that slows things down.

turn off windows firewall, getComodo 3, turn off defense +, use threatfire instead, and then use sandboxie if needed.
