I have Comcast Cable internet running into a WRT54G Wireless-G Router, but I still cant get past 50 kb/sec on ether a hard wired Dell desktop or my HP 6500t notebook. Everything is fine other than that, connects fine. Network is secured. Any ideas?

Check your bandwidth on cnet or speedtest.com. Make sure that the router has the latest firmware and that it's configured correctly.

You could have a really piss poor connection from the cable to your modem.

But, try bypassing your router, and plugging your computer straight into the modem. See if that changes anything, and post back.

With cable, if they have more than 3 connection (taps) prior to the modem you will have a weak signal. Then your speeds drop way off. My neighbor ran in to that when she moved her setup to another room.

Something similar happened to me: the cable line on the utility poles had been chewed on by unknown animals (squirrels?), and subsequently rusted, resulting in massive packet loss. My cable internet has only cut out two other times when the cable line was hit by a very tall vehicle (truck?).
