does anyone know how to add a printer to a network?

my current situation is this. My xp desktop is connected by usb to my canon printer, my desktop is connected wirelessly to my dlink dir655 router and also my laptop is connected wirelessly to this network.

i want to make it so that my laptop can print from this printer, ive tried adding wizards but they dont work. any help is appreciated.

You should be able to right click on the printer on the desktop machine and select "sharing" to allow other machines on the network to print to a printer. Then all it should take is the printer driver being installed on the laptop and it should see it as a shared printer on your desktop machine.

Slightly over simplified description there but I hope it helps.

That's the cheapest (free) and easiest way to do it.

The only problem is, the computer that the printer is shared from, has to be turned on for this to work.

You must also make sure you have file and printers sharing turned on before you will be allowed to share it. Once you make it shared, it should show up when you use add a printer wizzard. If it does not, use the IP address of the PC and see if it helps.

    no luck,

i enabled printer sharing on the desktop. then connected the printer via usb to my laptop so that it can update the drivers. then i reconnected it back to my dektop and my laptop still cannot detect it. i also tried the ip address but still no luck. hmm what could i be doing wrong. do i have to enable it through my router? i make sure my desktop is on while searching for the printer wirelessly

Did you add a FW rule into allow inbound traffic for your local subnet?

Unnecessary steps. Assuming File & Printer Sharing is enabled, after the printer is shared, simply go to "Add a Printer" in the Printers folder of your other computer. When you select the printer manually it should show up on the list. It will copy over the print driver automatically.

If it doesn't show up, go to Start -> Run and type \\computername and a folder will open showing all shared printers and folders on that computer. Right click the printer and connect to it.

If you don't know the name of the computer, right click the My Computer icon, and click Properties.
