Within a week I will have my laptop, but I have a question dealing with the issue of ad hoc wifi. Here is my scenario, I have a wired router connecting with four ports all connecting to each of my computers (we have four computers). I can't do a wired or wireless connection because 1). All my ports on the router are full 2). The router has no wireless capabilities. I've been searching around the web for alternatives to this situation. One has popped out in particular and that is doing an Ad hoc WiFi. The laptop itself has an integrated wifi card. So my idea is to buy a seperate external wifi usb card to connect to one of the computers so that I the laptop and the computer can see each other. But my question is, can the desktop computer connect the laptop through the usb card on the internet. And if so, what usb card?

I hope I am making sense.

Ok, so you're going to end up with one desktop that has (a) a wired connection into the router, which itself is plugged into your internet connection, and (b) a wireless card that will be used to share the desktop's wired connection with the new laptop, correct?

You should just buy a wireless router. Wifi ad hoc is not really reliable. Plus one computer has to be on for the other ones to be connected, so it adds trouble.

Anyway to answer you question on connection, yes, a desktop with a usb wifi reciever can connect to wifi signals. However, ad hoc's offer a limit of 30 ft of range, and sometimes less, as well as sometimes slower speeds.

Best bet is buyin the wifi router.
