I had a problem with the XP installation on my Aspire 3613 WLMi machine which would not boot, even in safe mode. I (apparently successfully) ran a repair by booting from the XP CD and then going via the setup menu to the repair option. I get the normal desktop with all the usual icons in place.

However, although the wireless card appears to be working OK (eg by checking in device manager) it will not detect the wi fi in my house despite the fact that the PC I am sending this from is connected by wi fi to the same network and is within 30 cms of the Aspire. Nor can it detect the other two nearby networks that this PC can. No available netwroks are shown. It will conect to the internet via a cable, however.

Do I need to load a new driver or how do I get the wireless card to detect my home network?

    Grateful for any help,
    Bill

Reload the driver for the wireless for the xp. Check all wireless card settings. Make sure you are not setup for work offline.
If problem persists give more detailed info about your operating system change and your wireless card model so somebody might be able to assist you.

reb1: Please forgive any poor descriptions as this problem is at the edge of my understanding of windows and networking.

The (manufacturer supplied) wireless card is a Boradcom 802.11g network adaptor. I downloaded the latest driver from the Acer website to a flash drive on another PC but when I tried to install it from the flash drive I got the message saying that no better match for the isnatlled hardware was found on the drive. I take this to mean that the installed driver is up to date.

I did check the wirless settings and saw nothing obviously worng but to be honest I am not sure exactly what I am looking for. In particular I don't know where the 'setup to work offline' would be found. Could you direct me to it please.

The repair operation re-loaded XP without any of the service packs; I was planning to install SP2 if all went well with the repair but I haven't done so yet. I could still install any of these via the cable connection but was concerned that doing so could compound the problem.

A couple of things I have noticed:
    1. In the network connections box it shows a 'Network Bridge'. I have tried with this both enabled and disabled and with the wireless network connection both added to it and not added to it when it was enabled. It makes no difference but I had not seen this feature before.

    2. The hard drie seems to be working continuously. Again, maybe nothing but it does seem different.

Again, I'd be very grateful for any assistance anyone can give and I am happy to give more information if what I have provided isn't enough - however, I might need a bit of help in finding the info.

    Regards and thanks
    Bill
