Wireless routers usually let you connect various wired and wireless devices at the same time (some take up to 30 devices), all sharing the same wireless connection so you should have no problems at all.
Unless you are talking about using your computer itself as a wireless gateway using a wired connection, then things become more complicated. -

In most cases it's cheaper buying a router vs a AP. But AP gives you more connection options (bridge, repeater, client, MP bridge...) . AP normally out perform routers due to dedicated hardware. A wireless router is nothing but a std router with a AP added. It shares all of the router resources (cpu, ram...). If you get a wireless router that supports the Linux firmware (dd-wrt or tomato) you will have more connection options. And they normally out perform the factory firmware.
