Recently I have purchased a linksys wrt54 gs and the 54gs adaptor from a local store, but I find that it is the version 7.0 means that I cannot use the 3rd party firmware like ddwrt. Also, the connection is always keep on "low". my room is only like 20 fts away from the router. I wonder why my connection is so bad(btw , i have a 2.4ghz cordless phone sitting 2 ft away from the router, is it a really big deal with the connection?)

Secondly, I find that newegg.com selling the wrt54gx for a decent price. Will it be a good move if I returned my wrt54gs router and the 54gs adaptor, and get the wrt54gx router and the gx adaptor?

the price for these combos are very silmilar. Please give me some advices~~

Yes...This is a very common problem in households with 2.4 GHz wireless phones and 802.11b or 802.11g wireless routers, which also broadcast on the 2.4 GHz frequency.

The WRT54GL is the safest bet if you want to use third-party firmware. The reviews are excellent, much better than for the other Linksys models.

Ditto what NetBrakr said. 2.4GHz wireless phones should be terminated with extreme prejudice. Setting your router to a different channel (1, 6 or 11) may help too.

Neglect the 3rd party firmware upgrade( I am not sure about how many performance boost can the firmware affect the connection.)

Is the wrt54gl better than wrt54gx?

The thing that wrt54gx attracted me is the srx and the comments about its consistency. Also, it was originally selling for 1xx but it is $6x now

I have the wrt54gs. among other things such as 2.4ghz devices interfering it will drop your connection about once a day. ive updated firmware, linksys support blah blah blah. no luck. so guess what, once i day i have unplug the stupid thing, wait 20 seconds and plug back in. linksys = waste of my time

i've got a 5th gen wrt54g(some extra suffix letter?). It's recently taken up a new game called "stop loading web pages". The game goes... the router stops letting web pages load. Then I power cycle it, and things work, and then the web pages stop loading again. Other net apps work.
