    It can be used in multiple ways. You can connect a computer without a wireless card to it via an ethernet cable and the device will act as an adapter to connect it to a wireless router.

    You can connect it directly to a wired router and make your wired router a wireless router.

    You can connect it with a long cat5 cable and extend your wireless networks range to areas your wireless router currently does not reach

    You can set it up half way across your house and it will boost (technically, repeat ) the signal from a far away laptop to your wireless router, This is called BRIDGE or REPEATER mode.
