FIOS is a type of DSL service that use MAC filtering. So depending on how you are connecting, direct or router MAC address will be registered in there system. In my area they use Actiontec routers. So its address is registered. If you connected directly for the setup then the wired mac address was used. Clone the wired mac address into the router and you should be fine.

btw. I used my own router for my setup, and use the actiontec as a sub router on it's own subnet for isolation.

Hi blue68f100, I found very interesting your comment, why do you say that FIOS is a type of DSL service, I thought FIOS is 100% fiber thechnology to the house.

I'm intrigued by your comment because I have a friend that claimed that he had fiber but when I met him at his house he had a DSL modem.

the router's yellow cord was plugged directly into out desktop which is working just fine. in addition to the desktop, there are 3 other laptops in the house including mine. the other 2, a sony and toshiba dont have the issues my acer is having.

Are you using a router (which one) ? If so in the setup for the WAN (internet) port there is an advanced option to use a particular MAC Address. If your on your Desktop just have the Router use the desktop MAC address. This is an option so you do not have to enter it. Then all computer will have full speed.

You can also try cablenut. I had to use it on one of my PC to correct a speed issue. It's an optimize that worked for me. Just download the addition aux pack that has for connection info then select the one that matches your speed (DSL).

If this is just a wireless thing. The actiontec def to WEP. This needs to be changed to WPA(2) AES Personal. Vista has issues with WEP.

I just found this thread b/c I am having the same problem. For me, it's just wireless that is giving me disconnects. I have changed the router to WPA(2) but am still having problems. Any ideas on why my FIOS wireless works with my XP laptops but not my new VISTA (Acer) laptop??

I spent 3 hours on the phone with FIOS tech support, yes 3 hours, and they ended up telling me i needed a USB wireless adapter. Heard of that?

    Please help!!

    Thanks in advance,

The actiontec router uses a Raylink 11b/g card. These are not the best and can cause problems with other mfg. I know first hand it does not like the USR (TI) chipset.

What distance are you at? Are you using def parameters? It sounds like you have some auth problems. Make sure you CLONE THE MAC ADDRESS OF THE PC (normally a wired port) USED TO SETUP THE ACCOUNT INTO THE ROUTER. This is the only to make sure the correct MAC address is being used. Their system will knock you off if the MAC address is not registered.

You can use your own hardware/AP if you need too. Like take a wireless router and turn it into a AP.

Vista has all kinds of problems with networking, so it could be a firmware problem with the acer. Since MS did a complete rewrite of the networking stack there are problems.
