well i recently got an ac router and me and brother john semi put it thru its paces
and so far this thing is a beast on speed..

Im sure Brother John wil comment more in depth on this so Ill leave that to him..

But what i wanted to hit on with this is my concern for killer cards in are laptops and alienware and killer claiming they will do 450mbps..
So far that is untrue.. the router (a Belkin acd1200) reads the card at a max of 300mbps..

Am I missing some thing here? is there an update to make these work better with the new AC routers?
Even tho it does hold insane speeds on file transfers 20+ MB per second im a little annoyed that its max speed reported is 300mbps when they clearly advertise it at 450..

well brother john if you would like to chime in here on the more technical stuff feel free... whats your thoughts.. on these new routers..

good right up... but the killer card on 5ghz should report back 450mbps not the 300 it shows..

IIRC 450mbps is only supported if both client and host support 3 spatial streams (3x3 MIMO). The killer cards are 3x3, but your router may not be.

If he is using the Belkin AC 1200 DB, that is exactly what the problem is. In the article I linked above, it mentions this limitation.

Maybe he can return it for a refund and get the Buffalo WZR-1800H instead for the same price.

i have a netgear n900 (WNDR4500) and a killer 1103 and it has never reported anything but 450Mbs. ive had this same card in 3 computers now, all with same result. im about 25 feet away through two walls. problem would have to be in router, because the killer n is capable of the speeds.

If I had to upgrade to an AC router, it would definitely be the Asus one. I got the RT-N56U, and it's one mean piece of equipment I can tell you! Results of AC Routers blow even the N56U out of the water... can't wait till prices go down a bit on those routers

If I had to upgrade to an AC router, I would definitely wait until AC adapters are out.

Great choice Brother DD :) I'd have gone with that all along. Please do give us your feedback on this router, as it's on my list of planned upgrades - curious to see how better its range is over the older model, as the range on the N56U is outstanding

well for one its oddly shaped... its like a big rectangul with the prongs coming out of the top of it and the dont move.. and its about 4 inches in total maybe a hair more so its really hard to get it to
stay in a socket.. I had to bend the prongs open a bit to get a better fit in the socket and even then it doesn't want to stay properly..
this plug is really ment to go on a power strip straight up and down not vertically out of a wall socket... horrible design ..

ill take a picture of it in a few to show you what im talking about..

so me and brother john played with this one last night a little bit and this one is faster than all the reviews..
i was semi tired last night so im sure ill be corrected if i get it wrong lol.. but here goes..

the test machines were my M18x running killer 1103 wirelessly.. and a i5 sony running wired..

from the M18x to the sony on file trnasfers i got an even 28 mb(not mbps) sustained.. with a burst rate for cool second of 40ish..

from the sony to the alienware i got even higher.. 34-38 mb with a burst rate of 70ish.. give a few there..

so over all.. on the 450mbps router we were getting 300+ but it did dip to 280ish if i remember correctly..

    Brother john was highly impressed..

later we are..or I am going to try bridging the wireless and the wired settings together to see if its possible to get over 600mbps..( his idea )

I havent tried any thing with range yet but no issues in the house.. any where you go.. and its an ooooooooooooooooold house with old ungrounded wires.. lots of interference.. so we shall see later..
the best i can do is go out back.. where I got a quarter acre to play with..

I have the RT-AC66U version of the same router, earlier release, with the killer 1103, works perfectly.
I use the modded (Merlin) firmware, as he fixes Asus mistakes and adds extras to the features, great work.
Tomato/dd-wrt is a work in progress on this device.
I tried a belkin AC usb NIC, windows had it running at 768 Mbps, seemed fast, but the usb is 2.0, too slow.

20 MB per second is about 160 megabits per second in real-world performance. You're never going to get the advertised rates in real-world performance simply because WiFi isn't designed like that. Lots of factors limit real-world performance, regardless of which radio technology you use.

With my Killer 1103 and Linksys ea4500 (802.11n) I get transfers (from a server connected via GigE to my laptop on WiFi) in the area of 128mb/s, which is about 16 MB/sec. 160mbs is an improvement, but it still seems a tad slow to me... I thought 802.11AC was promising negotiation-rates up to a gigabit?
