Maybe you could find a replacement for the Internal, it would have to be one meant for the Y580 since Lenovo whitelists their wireless adapters.

Otherwise, that cisco adapter should be fine, I used a Linksys WUSB600N before and it worked pretty well. Just don't get one of those mini adapters that are the size of Logitech's nano receiver, the antennas in those are going to be small and range/reception will suffer as a result.

I'm using a Realtek RTL8191SU USB with external antenna for $10 (new egg). Works great, its Realtek, great drivers and support, and can attach better antenna.

Replace the internal card rather than buy a USB one preferably with an Intel 6200/6300.

Or slimly buy a Lenovo card that is supported by BIOS. Y580 is new and popular so you should have no problem finding which cards other users have upgraded to and cards meant for Lenovo are easily available on eBay and such so that shouldn't be a problem either.
