Which make and model are you going to buy?
-
Generic ones they don't have a name.

Wouldn't expect that much from those.

Thanks for trying to help but that doesn't answer my question if 85Mbps homeplugs are faster or slower than 20Mb cable modem.

You will not get the full 20Mb speed provided by your ISP. At each network node, the signal deterriorates resulting in a decrease of the speed. Sending the network signal through your home's power grid is going to provide slower speeds than if you were using a router with a wired or wireless connection to your PC.
You will not have 20 Mbps connection due to:
1. The pair of homeplugs count as 2 nodes. The signal from your modem goes to the first homeplug (the first node), to the second homeplug (second node), and finally to your computer's NIC (third node).
2. The homeplugs send the signal through the home's power grid. There is a lot fo electrical interference. This will change based on how many appliances you have connected in the house because this changes the power draw on the grid. -
so on that logic buying 200Mbps homeplugs are a waste of money over the 85Mbps ?

Buy homeplugs if there is definately no other way. Otherwise go with wireless.

Apart from those that need to move about alot your the first person to ever suggest to me that wireless is better than homeplugs ?

"I also used the open source network testing tool iperf to measure the link's TCP bandwidth and got 43.5Mbps - just over the guaranteed minimum. Compare that to the 11.6Mbps I got from my 802.11g wireless network - in the vicinity of six other WLANs - using the same test"
