I'm buying a laptop online from amazon.com
Is says under the "wireless" sections the laptop has 802.11a.
Would that be the same as a wireless N card?

Can you provide a link to the laptop? 802.11a!=802.11n, btw, a is significantly slower than n.
-
Yea, the A interface is slower and older, and less range...
personally, if it only has a A interface, stay away -
+1, dont go for that one.
support for 802.11a has actually been dropped in some routers etc. -
Well, we actually have no way of knowing for sure what the laptop in question has unless you give us a few more details, like make and model at the bare minimum.

The hp dv5t

Which series? There are three, according the _HP support website.
However, odds are, if it supports 802.11a, it probably has a draft "N" card in it because the b/g cards weren't compatible with a but "N" is compatible with all three a/b/g.
Best bet is to actually ask the seller what the particular wireless card is that the system has.
802.11a??
