what's the whole big deal about this new connectivity? how much more speed and range does it give me? and how does it work? does it still use the old IEEE versions or is it a completely new wifi version?

Wireless-N only gives you a bigger boost in speed when you're transferring files over a network, otherwise things like download speed, upload speed, etc. are capped by your ISP. Supposedly it gives you more range but right now Wireless-N is not worth it due to many disconnections or so I have heard.

I've got a couple of areas in my house with marginal wireless coverage, and my new laptop with the intel a/b/g/n nic gets a full-strength signal in these areas, and it never disconnects on it's own (everything is using 802.11g). However, it DOES seem to cause other laptops to lose their connections, when it's placed near them!

Currently 11n hardware is using the 2.4 ghz along with 11g. Some have been playing with using 5ghz bandwidth. There is currently no distance improvement by tester, but there is a speed boost.

The 2.1 spec address the NOT playing well with others. So knocking other off line will be the reverse. So if a 11g is present it will drop out of MIMO and play nice, and may even drop to 11g.

Be warned that the 11n hardware that I have seed does not have removable antennas and are fixed 1-2dbi. So a 11g with High gain antennas will smoke a 11n on distance.

If this is your first time getting into a wireless network, you plan to keep it for the next few years and you are concerned with speed, I suggest going with the Wireless-N. You will be up-to-date with the latest technology for just a few more dollars.

Its still in draft but its in spec 2 already so its pretty close to finalizing. So its gonna mostly be about the same with the finalized version. Get the Asus WL500W router its one of the best ones i have seen.

Even if the spec i 99% complete, I'd still personally wait for the next generation of hardware to come out, when all/most of the unforeseen problems with the current generation are fixed.

Technically the spec should minimise the chances of such problems, but unfortunately if there are some parts open to interpretation, or if hardware manufacturers cut corners to be first-to-market .. it could cause incompatibility problems.
