I switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands on my laptop. Each band has a unique SSID. Sometimes the location name for the 5 GHz band will change to 2.4 GHz name. In order to fix it I have to delete the 5 GHz location name and then the original name from the SSID will be assigned. Why does this happen? I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

    If I understood this.
You are configuring the computer , not the access point.

What is the precedence of your network order?

Also, you can set a network band preference under the driver configuration. You might left it on default which is either.

You are correct. I'm configuring the laptop. The setup is pretty simple. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands have unique SSIDs. I initially connected by clicking on each one in the list of available networks and entering the key. After that my laptop had two network locations with names that matched the SSIDs. The 5 GHz band was first on the list under Manager Wireless Networks.

All was well with the world at this point. After a few days of manually switching between the bands without a problem something strange happened. The location name of the 5 GHz band changed to be the same as the location name of the 2.4 GHz band. In other words there were two entries in the location name list with the same name. The SSID didn't change, just the location name. I'm trying to figure out why this happend.

Well, I'm not to sure about this. I could give a try.

If I recall correctly, windows network location differentiate ssid by the MAC interface of the AP.

So, your router (E3000?) I believe, has two MAC address on the wireless switch.

You could check that each of the wireless interface of the AP has unique MAC address.

I'm using wndr4000, similar idea with ssid and the network location, but mine set to automatic connect with band preference instead of signal strength.
