I just changed the channel on my router from 3 to 6 for months it was fine but I was getting packet loss. I have over 35 routers in my neighborhood. Will changing the router from 150 to 54 reduce the interferance? I don't stream video as that is connected wired. The only thing wireless is my iPod touch just streaming a lot of radio and printer.

And no 5Ghz is out of the question as not even my laptop has 5Ghz.

No difference between 150 and 54 as both use 20MHz channels- there will be no change physically.

Thanks. I just thought 150mbps used more data so more interferance but as long as its 20mhz it is the same.

Now that I am on the laptop checking inSSIDer some router nearby moved from channel 6 to channel 2 which is why I was getting massive packet loss during audio streaming. Why could they have just used a unused frequency for WiFi?

Some router have setting to auto pick the "best" channel[default on usually] but usually they don't work. Especially when you have 35 2.4Ghz network around you ~~

you know changing your wifi card isn't that big of a deal. If your laptop manufacturer whitelists wifi cards then you just find one that comes with your brand. If not then you're in luck and just pick one that you like.

in some rare cases you can upgrade the bios on your laptop with one that doesn't whitelists cards (that's what I did), but dont know if one like that would be available for your model.

what wifi card do you have ? It could be just a driver issue. I recently found out that one of my laptops has intel 3965 wifi card that is ABG, i.e. goes up to 54mbps but still supports 5Ghz channels, and I though it doesn't :D

I changed my router to auto and it picked channel 6. Many of the 35+ routers are very weak anyway my iPod does not even see them and my Dell XPS1702 only picks up about 12 but many say poor. It is the 3 my touch pickup that concern me. I can't post a screenshot because I am typing this on my iPod but when I am on the laptop I will post a screenshot.

Have you tried changing the power management of the wifi card in windows device properties? this might help keep a clear signal.

there used to be a program that was available so you could see what channels all the networks around broadcast on... I'll backtrack through my old drive and see if I can remember what it was called.

The program is called in SSIDer, no need to go through your old installers.

Thanks but I run my laptop wired in matter of fact any device that has a Ethernet port I run wired. Even two computers on different floors I run wired. The only thing that is wireless is devices that can only run wireless like my iPod Touch and Canon Printer.

It is this stupid router BULLWINKLE. It keeps changing channels and now it is on channel 5 next to me. No matter where I move it has to move next to me in channels.

Wow, that is one crappy wireless environment, what router do you have by the way, if you have a not so good router, it could have an impact. I remember when i was on the terribad gateway 2wire that came from my ISP, even a few networks and a cordless phone was a real pain.

Stupid BULLWINKLE router killed my wifi again. I noticed streaming on the iPod Touch that it was not as smooth and web pages were loading slow. I got alot of packet loss and only about 1 mbps speed. Changed my router back to channel 3 and it is back at 9 mbps still the stupid BULLWINKLE router decides to go on channel 2 or 4.

    I have the WNR3500L.
