I am getting ready to purshase a notebook. One of the options is if I want the 3945ABG wireless card installed or not. I don't mind using an external card at all. Is the 3945ABG worth the money or will I get better reception from an external card?

I prefer internal cards. One less thing to lose, and they usually get as good, if not better reception than external cards. It's also not something dangling off the side of your computer if you decide to move it.

I prefer the internal card. Who knows in the future you might buy a card that you will need the slot for.

I prefer the internal, But my ralink want talk to the AP 10' from it. So I use a pcmci card. I believe that is the pro card which has good reviews. Intel does have one as bad as the ralink. Not all are equal. But most external have a longer range than internal.

The Intel wifi card has pretty good reception and works as advertised. Some people have mixed feelings about this card, but its a strong card overall.

I have mixed feelings on mine. It has great range and throughput is great on most connections. But I don't like Intel's management software. It's not unstable, but it uses a lot of resources. Problem is, if I just install the drivers, I can't connect to my home wireless network, and that's no good. I've learned to live with it, though.

if you're going to be moving around internal is the way to go. That "thing" sticking out is a ripped out usb port waiting to happen.

You don't have to do use the Intel wireless, you can tell Windows to manage your wifi. But I did hera some things about people having trouble to connect with wifi spots with windows.
