I have a Actiontech dsl modem with a fiber optic connection. I have a Dlink DIR 850L for my cameras and Dlink DIR 842 as a wifi extender upstairs. The 842 is hardwired to the 850l. I want the fastest speeds from the wifi upstairs. What settings should i use for the 5G

There is not much of a choice here - set channel width to 80MHz if available (there might only be an "auto" option), set transmission power to the hightest and have WMM enabled and obviously WPA2-AES set.

You can tweak 5G channels to 153,157 or 161. I usually set to 153 or 157 so the signal is steady when I am away from the router and sitting on table in my room. On 2.4G I use channel 11 since I got lot of 2.4G routers running on Auto mode in my neighborhood.

Thanks for the advice. This has been a battle. It seems everything needs to be restarted after major tweaking including routers, hubs and computers and tablets.
I used the 153 channel and auto 20/40/80 as its the only setting available other than 20/40.
I am getting up to 250Mbs down and up on my devices now. I previously has an older dlink dual band without ac setting an could only manage 150ish Mbs from devices on the 250Mb line.

It was fine when i had the 150Mb line but i like to have everything performing top notch.
I downloaded a 2GB game on Steam today in less than 2 minutes. Pretty sweet.

I found a Dlink DIR 859 used locally yesterday. Got it for nothing because the power supply was missing. I ditched the dir 842 and set this up as my upstairs AP. I updated the firmware to the latest and i now get 280Mbs up and downloads from all my devices upstairs. I left all the wifi settings on default except of course ssid and password.

Very very pleased with this router. The dir 842 was not good at all. It was all over the place for speeds and mostly on the very low side.
