    hi
i just installed a linksys wrt600n dual radio router in my house. my laptop supports both 2.4ghz and 5ghz, wheras my other computers are only 2.4ghz.
i have been trying to use the 5ghz on my laptop, when i turn it on, it offers me one network called linksys media to connect to, but nothing happens.
the router itself says both 2.4 and 5ghz radios are on.
    any ideas>
are their any noticeable differences between 2.4 and 5?
    thanks a lot

Your wireless cards would have to support this band in order to connect, which could be your problem. I believe 5GHz was instated because some 2.4GHz phones (though a different exact MHz usually) can cause some problems with wireless. You won't notice a difference in speed.

EDIT: Just noticed you said the laptop supports 5GHz. Maybe you have it set to 2.4GHz only in your software somewhere?

    hi thanks,
i have changed it to 5ghz in order to see the linksys media network? but still no luck.
also i have been trying to use the linksys software that came with the router to lock my network but for some weird reason the cd and my computer wont get along, it just searches for the network with no luck. but the network is there.
in short, what is the easiest way to lock my network?
    thanks

Log into your router via web control panel (should be 192.168.1.1, default is blank username with admin as the password). Go to Wireless, click wireless security, change it to WPA2 personal and add in a key. Let the router reboot, or whatever it needs to do.

Using 5GHz, not only you will avoid potential interference with the so many 2.4Ghz devices, and therefore keep the link up, but you will also get a higher throughput because the increased amount of channels and their pair arrangement to generate a higher bandwidth.

To change the wireless mode, you need to change the wireless adapter settings. Just right click on the network icon on the system tray, select Network and sharing center, status, properties, continue, configure, advanced, and select the appropriate option.

    i really appreciate it,
one more quick question, how do i know if i am using wireless N?
i cant find out where it says, i just want to double check,
    thanks a lot

also is there any benefit in using a wide radio channel 40mhz over 20 mhz?
    thanks

40MHz is certainly better than 20MHz, higher throughput.

If you are getting over 100Mbps is because your link is working using N protocol. Open your wireless adpater and it should tell you about the throughput.

Depending on the usage, the router might for 20MHz instead of 40MHz. However I find strange 13Mbps, that's very low, see if your computer adapter is on maximum transmit power.
