ive got the ntl guy comming round to fit the 10mb package at my new place. there are 5 people living in my student house. If I get a router will it split up the 10mb to 2mb each?or can i do it so that everyone can use the 10mb- so i can download at 10mb when no one else is using the net? what is the best router to get to give 4 people wireless and one person via wire? with the cheapest wireless dongles aswell. Been trying to work out the best but not sure as there are so many with all these different options like having a network which we wouldnt need.

thanks and sorry for being so uneducated in the whole networking game....

routers are great, any 54g will give you fluid distribution... what i mean by that is its not split up 2mb each, but 10mb according to whoever is using it... cheapest 54g usb drives are netgears any good deal on a netgear, linksys router is fine for the job... i'd stay away from d-link, as they have problems... especially with refurbished items... to actually be able to use the 10mb speeds however... you need to configure the router to allow access to the ip addresses... through port forwarding etc...

You should beable to get 10mbps from any lan port with a small hit for the NAT firewall. If you need to controll bandwidth you may need to install a manage switch. Or upgrade the router to Linux Firmware, wrt-dd.

thanks for the comments, i was thinking of getting this router - Linksys WRT54G-UK Wireless-G 54MBPS Broadband Router from http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-WRT54G-UK-Wireless-G-54MBPS-Broadband/dp/B00008DOYO
as it is the best price. will it go from the wall where ntl install the wires to the router and then through wi fi to the usb dongles i get? Does anyone reccommend any good usb dongles that are cheap aswell as have good range?

Can I access the internet on my pda via bluetooth and send files to my pc through it?

Linksys has revised this unit to a NON Linux Fireware (v5). When they did it they cut the ram in 1/2 trying to keep the wrt-dd linux firmware from being installed. If it is a v4 model it is good. The v5 ( non Linux) has many issues, particuly when tring to handle multiple sessions, which you will have with multiple users.

They make a GL model which as the linux firmware. This may be a better model to chose from. The Aftermarket WRT-DD fireware has QoS and Bandwidth control. Which you may need to keep users from hogging all the bandwidth (P2P, Bit tollorent).
