Im trying to see if we can get this ball rolling. Im sure that alot of you guys and gals have gotten the above message from just trying to install or upgrade the wirless card (mini-pci)from your hp/compaq laptop. Im sure also that all of us consider this an unfair business practice but nothing will happend if only a few of us complain about this subject. Im trying to gather some ideas as to how we can go about to make our voices heard. One place we can start is by complaing to the BBB (http://www.bbb.org/). Not sure if they have the power to help us out on this subject. Im sure that there are other better places were we can submit our distress. Please reply to this thread so we can all go in full force and make some changes to that dreaded BIOS Whitelist. Can you imagine if you bought a car from ford and you couldnt upgarde you stereo system because it was locked or change the rims in your car becuase if you did your car would refuse to move. IT JUST DOESNT MAKE SENSE TO ME!. Im surprised HP/Compaq didnt put the RAM OR HDD in the whitelist also. HMMMMMMMMMMM.

I hope i dont start a revolution here but then again....
Email me if you like but i prefer if you post so all of us can see and share our ideas.

The BBB does not do anything. All they do is send a report of your complaint to the company and the company will respond to it. After that you can tell the BBB that you accept the response or not. Then they put a rating on the company based on the amount of complaints. Basically it's worthless to try and get anything achieved by them.

Instance I had a receiver rom KLH which basically overheated as soon as you turned it on for longer then 5 minutes. I complained and pretty much the company said we have now hired a business to take care of customer complaints. The business gave me the run around and pretty much said maybe you should go to Bestbuy to get it repaired. Well obviously fixing a fried receiver costs more then a brand new one. Did I mention I had the receiver for about 1 month LOL

In short don't expect much from the BBB cause all they do is try to help you be able to contact people about your complaints. At which time your complaints will be dealt with with no solution in sight other then repair it ourself or get a new one.

come on hp, listen to us, your customers, the ones who thought they would get a good laptop, but end up getting a centrino that can only really connect when wired into the network

release a bios update that allows us to replace our mini pci cards with a card of our choice

or get together with intel and get our cards replaced FREE OF CHARGE with a card that "does what it says on the tin" WIRELESS PLEASE

Intel inside........ wish it was atheros!!!!!!

I figured it out, all you need to do is just unplug the wireless card from the bottom, (it is right next to the hard drive) boot into windows and download the older bios version for the motherboard, install and reboot. Once rebooted shut it down again reseat the Wireless Card and then boot back into windows. If you have any questions e-mail me.

After some back and forth (including a threat or two) with Compaq's tech support, they gave me this message:

I have done some extended research on the issue and found that the error message appears when the embedded wireless device is enabled in BIOS. To resolve the issue I suggest you to disable the embedded wireless, and then you can use the internal wireless card. Please perform the steps below to disable the embedded wireless device:

    1. Press F10 to enter into the BIOS.

    2. Go to advanced menu.

    3. Then embedded wireless device should be disabled.

    4. Select "Set Defaults and Exit."

And then exit the setup. Now install the card and try to boot the error message will no longer appear.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to you by the previous communication. Please perform the steps and get back to us with the results. We will be glad to assist you further.

    Sincerely,

    Catherine
    HP Total Care

I hope this works and helps everyone. I haven't had a chance to see if it works yet.

Method described by CaryStevens does not work.

In the first place. What kind of training does this tech support person get.

The information provided is so logically wrong.

    Disable the onboard wireless.

    Install your new wireless card.

    And it should fix it.

Hello, how can some run if its disabled.

Besides. The BIOS whitelist check runs before the routine to disable the card is run. I know, I disabled a known good wireless card. put in a blacklisted card. And it still gave me the 104 error.

My laptop is a NC6230 with the latest BIOS.
