If you run plugged directly into the modem, do you have access? Your connection may be down or you may need to reconnect.

This is the message i get.
Local Area Connection Status: Limited or No Connectivity. You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

I think that your connection is bad/ or down.

What kind of internet access do you have? If you go to the modem/router's IP does it show you as connected. If you have DSL you should probably be connected via PPPOE.

    windows>run>"ipconfig/all">write down the default gateway.

Type this into your browser and see if your router pops up. If you haven't changed the linksys defaults, your username should be left blank and the password is "admin"...

Go and look at connection status, let us know what it says.

EDIT: so you have internet on one computer attached to the connection? Strange... Have you tried setting a manual IP address?

Are you able to share resources through the router (I mean like dragging/dropping files from Desktop to laptop) I wonder if the router port is dead--have you tried using a different outlet?

i tried using a different outlet no luck. my laptop is running vista, desktop is xp home. its been this way for like 3 months. i hooked up my xbox 360 using my laptop connection (bridged the LAC w/ wifi and wired to 360 via ethernet) but i disconnected the 360 yesterday and it was fine. i dont think my desktop and laptop can drag/ drop becasue they cant see each other. i never really set it up for that (sharing files)

At this point you may want to contact linksys and/or your internet provider.

This might be stupid, but did you type your key in correctly? I misread a 6 as a 9 on mine once and it saw the AP, but when it tried connecting, the router wouldn't issue it an IP, and it gave the same limited connectivity error you are reporting.

Also, whenever our 2.4GHz cordless phone rings or is active, it interferes with the wireless unless I'm 2 feet away from the AP. So make sure the key is correct and that there's no interference.

As a last resort, you could try overstepping DHCP for your computer only and assign your computer a static IP (most routers will do this). Then take that IP and plug it into your network connection TCP/IP settings (along with the subnet mask, gateway ip, and name server ips).

What do you mean you just installed vista and it fine? Mine has vista and im getting a limited connection. I have powered down, do i have to set some configurations on my wireless card before i can connect? I didnt think i had to since it picked up signals right out of the box.

Did you get the problem resolved? I do DSL Tech Support for Embarq and I have found the following 2 items usually fixes it. The first one probably won't help since you have one computer that is running and it sounds like the second one should work since you set the ip manually and you were able to get to the router.

If you connect directly to the modem and you are still not able to get an IP then try the following.

1st do a hard reset on the modem. For ours it is 30 seconds on the reset button located inside of a small pin hole.

2nd do a Winsock Reset. On both Vista and Windows XP SP2 you can do this simply by typing "netsh winsock reset" at the command line but without the quotes. You have to do this via an Administrator Command Prompt in Vista otherwise it won't work properly.

If those fail and you are running a firewall on this computer then disable it. Next swap the network cord as that tends to be the next likely solution. I've seen where a firewall blocks the ip assignment for some reason. I've also seen where a faulty or defective network cord will cause this as well.
