I have a problem with dropping wireless connection since i bought a new Compaq C710ED (america : C714NR). What happens exactly? (btw: it has a broadcom chip). As you can see i have checked very much already... Hope someone can give me advise.

All works OK. In 3 seconds connection to wireless network. After a random amount of time (or data?) it just drops. When renewing the network-scanner Vista says it cannot find new networks! Normally there are about 5 different networks from people around the area in it. When the connection drops, the blue light of the WLAN on the notebook is stable.

    • Disable/enable the networkadaptor has no use: i need to restart the laptop or do it some time in sleep-mode and come back
    • I tried another wireless router: it has the same problem
    • Disabled are powersaving options for the networkcards
    • Latest drivers are installed
    • Two other laptops in the house with wireless cards (even 1 of 10 years old!!) always work perfectly with no drops!
    • It shows totally no networks when it has dropped: i guess this must be some hardware/vistadriver thing.
    • When it drops, it is not disabled from the devices: it stays there the same, works correctly etc.
    • I wrote it in a support-letter to the repair man at Compaq. They have changed the motherboard. It came back and guess what: it still does not work...
    • Connection strenght always very good (close to router, 5 meter)
So i decided to test new things before a new sending:

    • Installed XP and the broadcam XP drivers: the same problem. Also dropping after some time!
    • Tried to disable that IPV6 tunnel adaptor as written in this threath... no result
    • Static IP adres - no result
    • Change from WEP to WPA: no result
    • Disabling IPv6: no result
    • So, what do you guys think about this?

I have the feeling that WHEN it drops the connection, somehow the wireless adaptor is turned off or in a big sleep mode, while all settings in windows and led-indicators on the laptop show a fine working card. But they have already swapped the motherboard in the last repair..!

Have you changed the channel on the router? It sounds like there is a lot of interference on the wireless channel you are currently using.

Have you taken your laptop to another network (coffee shop, friend's house, etc)? It may be something specific to your particular location.

Are you using your network for anything else? I had a similar issue when transferring large files. One laptop had a problem, two other computers did not. I ended up disabling my media server (Twonkyvision) to fix it.

Sounds like the radio is over heating and shutting down. I would see about getting another wireless card.

Update: i let the laptop online wireless for the night (sleep mode turn off), and it stayed online (no activity like downloading or internetting). When i started internetting or downloading after 10 minutes the problem came back again.

Update 2: going to send it over to Compaq for the last time. If they cannot find anything this machine will be brought back to the shop!

@kegobeer: yes i have tried at another house, there the same problem existed.

@blue68f100: as you can see in the update i have exactly the same feeling: i do not know if overheating is the problem, but something inside makes the networkcard turn off or something, without the sensors or windows seeing it.

Tell me: i thought the wireless card on this system (dual core, P965) was integrated on the mainbord. This is not the issue? Damn, why those guys at HP only replaced the motherboard the last time.

The wireless card should be a removable, connected to the mb. I think it's a pcie slot card.

Same thing happened to my new Sony Vaio AR630E except when I tried to reboot, Vista will stuck at the "Shutting down" screen forever. I had to use the power button.

Then I checked my power option profile (Best Performance), I see the hard drive's been set to shut down after some minutes for both "On battery" and "Plugged in". Changed them to "Never" fixed the problem. Lessons learned, never assume anything, even for the least power saving profile.

Edit: I thought I fixed it, but it happened again. Looks like I need to start a new thread for myself.
