Im looking to install a 2nd hdd in my new GT60, i see that the primary hdd doesnt use a cage/bay. instead it looks like it uses a little metal piece at the back end to hold it in place. any idea where i can order this piece.
Ive also seen videos of the gt70/gt60 with people not using any kind of bay or adaptor to hold the hdd in place. Can i just install the hdd without any kind of bay/adaptor?

You can actually order this from the MSI Store itself. You might have to email their support and get the part number ( http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/uploads/157/MS-16F3_Disassembly_guide.pdf )
https://shop.msicomputer.com/App/StoreFront/StoreFront.aspx
That's the link for the store. You would probably be best off sending someone there an email (there should be a 'contact us' button somewhere).
Specifically you need :
HDD Bracket: P/N 307-6F10112-C22 QTY : 1
Screw: P/N E43-1304009-G68 QTY : 2
That should be it. I think it'll run you around $15 and another $5 or so for shipping, if I remember right.
I only know all this because I got the parts to convert my GT70 with SuperRaid into a normal HDD slot without the 2 mSATA slots. That's all. -

Or
MSI Genuine GT70, GT780R, GT780DX, GT783, MS-1761 Notebook Second Hard Drive Retention Block E2Y-7611811-Y40
This piece can be fashioned from a hard pencil eraser. -
I've seen that eraser trick in lieu of a bracket.
How does that keep the drive in place without being screwed in? -

In the box with my GT780DX was a solid block without a step.
In the hard drive metal bracket kit I bought at the MSI notebook service center for about $10 was the bracket,4 screws and a stepped retention block.
The stepped block is much better. It's the one that should be fashioned from a hard eraser.Attached Files:
