I think he's referring to it still being on pre-order.
EDIT: Too late. Still, it's been out for more like 1 week, not "weeks".

As for why it isn't on Amazon, I guess other retailers are higher up on ASUS' priorities. I don't think it will be that long before it's on Amazon though.

mdsniper7, why does it have to be Amazon in particular?

Amazon is always a bit slow on getting new laptop releases. In any event, Amazon does have a STELLAR return policy.

For a notebook I would stay away from amazon. Your better off with a smaller company who will support you and answer your questions if you have a problem. Once the sale is done at amazon you have no tech support from them.

Agreed, and remember the point I was sharing: shady scammers on the loose everyday every second, everywhere. Just be careful when making your purchases, guys. I know I will be.

When it comes to a big purchase like a laptop, better to go for the tech support and pay a lil extra, never know when you might need it

Funny to see how some people fail to see that good service is of value. And then when something goes wrong they will complain that whoever they bought it from isn't responsive and doesn't care enough about their customers.

Cynical much? Well people provide a service and it's up to you whether you're willing to pay for it. Everyone has their own set of preferences. It's a capitalist society.

my advice to you: if your budget is that tight then maybe you should wait a few months to loosen up your budget. i'm sure if you kept your expenses down you'd be able to save some more money to have a better budget. Who knows? maybe a better laptop will be out by then.

Well now it sounds like we're poo poo-ing amazon which is still a fine retailer of a lot of things. If you're stickin with the stock configuration then they shouldn't be a problem. When you start custom configuring the thing, that's when service plays a larger role.

For me, $50-100 dollars more IS money, but as mentioned, it's money well spent. Buying from an independent reseller means a couple of things:

    1) You can, in all liklyhood, actually call up the company and talk to the owner or a tech who, in all liklyhood, actually processed your order. I bought by Asus through BTOTech, and the folks over there were a greta help.

    2) Independent resellers really can't afford not to have good customer service, since that is one of the few differentiators between them and giants like amazon / buy.com

    3) If nothing else, you can feel good that your money is supporting an independent business / local (to somewhere) business, and not a giagantic multi-national.

    Oh well, that's my take.

    That's right! I'm not just a number I'm ######### in particular!

But yes, there is a nice feeling knowing your money is going to good people (or at least people who will appreciate it more).

They don't charge a restocking fee which is HUGE imo although I can understand supporting the small guy.

By the way, Amazon seems to have it in stock now. I still wouldn't buy it from them because they list a 6 cell battery, but if it turns out they're wrong, I'll have to consider them.

I had mine pre-ordered from Amazon but switched to Provantage before Amazon came in stock. Ordered Monday & received Tuesday in Calif (only paid for 2day pm delivery). No tax, cost was only $2 more than Amazon's with 1 day delivery. Amazon's description's off. Model is listed as 098US which comes with 9 cell and 2.0 web everywhere else.

So, you got the 9 cell? Provantage looks decent, but do they charge a restocking fee on returns?

What was the total bill at Provantage for you?

Also, would you recommend Provantage? They have a very poor rating on resellerratings. Also, their site has very little description for the GX640.

$1120 total and fast delivery. Never used them before but feedback from this site was okay.

Will see about that recommmendation in a few hrs. Looks like the AC adaptor I received is faulty. There's a green led that's on when plugged in. That's gone out sometime in the past hr. Now running on remaining battery charge. Reseated plugs but cannot get it to relight. No electrical odor, such as from a short, or heat from the brick, just no power. Will see how their customer support is when they reopen.

Oops, jumped the gun. AC adaptor is fine. My outlets are out. Very odd. Breakers are all ok but all of the empty outlets in 2 bedrooms & a bath are out. Stranger still, my clock, TV, media center, and light switches in those rooms and everywhere else in the house are all fine. So no call to Provantage needed, instead I need an electrician.

You sure the breakers are ok? To properly reset a breaker you need to push it all the way to off, and then back to on. If the breaker tripped for some reason and someone switched it back on wrong, you could be running into that.

That's what it was. Looked like it was okay but when I reset, power on. My daughter's blow dryer appears to be the culprit.

Kinda'a funny overall. The wall outlet I had the adaptor in is the only one in that room on the same circut as her bedroom & bath. With everything else on in the room I was in, didn't dawn on me that the outlet went off.
