looking for a 4k laptop, and it looks like the GT73 has an ips 4k panel with 100% adobe rgb AND g sync.
so that meets my biggest need (good screen)

i havent really had time to game since im always away from the desktop but id be hoping to get some gaming in my spare time on the laptop, but im not really sure what kind of gpu i need for 4k.
i tested a 4k monitor on my desktop 1080, and it played the few games i tried really well (assetto corsa, mortal kombat, shadow of mordor).
think the panel is limited to 60 frames, so idk if the mobile 1080 will be good or i have to pay the extra $700 for the 1070 sli version

As long as the games you like support it the 1070 sli will perform way better. GSync really helps make sli more enjoyable imo.

I'm saying this before all the sli haters come in. I own 980 Ti sli on desktop and have next to no issues with it. It's been absolutely great. A 1080 is significantly weaker than 1070 sli for 4K. However, if your games are lighter weight it'll be fine. Just note a 1080 can't drive triple a games on ultra at 4K. 1070 pretty much can though sometimes you'll have to make a couple compromises.

thats the question lol. if they support it then yeah from what i checked i'll get 70 fps.
meanwhile the 1080 got around 50 ish fps on everything except a few games like mafia 3 (44fps) according to notebookcheck.net

obv i dont really care about going past 60 fps, so im just not sure if that extra 10 fps is worth $700. i wasnt planning to go past $3000, but if its going to make that much of a difference

the other negative i could think about would be if the sli is extremely hotter/louder and if it will affect me being able to take the laptop with me to work.

I don't have anything against SLI in particular, it would be best if there was even more support. I have found in general triple A games do have some sort of SLI support more often than not. That being said, I mostly only recommend it when a single GPU is not enough.

Personally, 4K is way too taxing for most systems. It speaks volumes when the minimum to max it is a SLI system because otherwise you start to compromise. I do play at 4K with my 980m SLI system and get playable performance but I do have to tweak my settings and/or play at 30fps for the newest games.

I decided to wait it out for 4K. I plan on getting a GT73 with a single 1080 (despite it supporting SLI) because I would rather concentrate on VR and playable sub 4K res.

SLI 1070/1080 is a heck of a lot of power :) good luck!

the 1080 outpreforms your 980m sli so youre should be getting 50 fps fps at the least on your games unless its one of the games like mafia 3 that dips in the 40s

i havent really had anything in the 50s, ive had mostly x80s and 1440p/1080p monitors. im assuming 50 ish fps is smooth enough to play most games?

my two issues are cost and portability.
    1) $700 more
    2) i need something i can take with me to do work on. im guessing the sli will need a bigger power brick and will run noiser/hotter?

My 980m SLI is overclocked and scores higher than a stock GTX 1080. I also benched a couple of games and got very similar results. Like Witcher 3 fully maxed with Hairworks and all, got 30fps at 4K same as a GTX 1080.

So I am not expecting more, just the same max performance I have but on all games, not just SLI enabled games. Plus a huge boost for VR which is my main concern.

I personally think 1070 and 1080 are both powerful and close in performance so you should go for the cheaper option.

Yes, SLI will require more power. I believe SLI systems are shipping with dual PSUs.
