Is the notebook still covered by the warranty?

    Is it a US model?

Does it powerup on battery or is the battery power not working also?

It could simply be that the AC Power Adapter has gone bad so it can't power the notebook nor can it charge the battery.

The port where the AC Power Adapter plugs into the notebook could be damaged?

Do you know anyone that has an MSI notebook with a 150W or 180W AC Adapter that you can try to see if it is a bad adapter causing your issue?

In any case you should contact MSI or the place you bought it to see about getting it fixed.

What happens if you plug the adaptor in when the machine is off?

The adapter itself "turns off" when you plug it onto the machine? Maybe it is shorted, a DC jack problem? The PSU could be at fault too, but then again battery should work... unless it drained completely.

Did you notice your game was running slow? If the adapter went and you were running off battery you should have noticed your game was slow for some time before it shut off due to the battery running out.

IMO your best option at the moment is to get a new AC Power Adapter.I suggest the 180W one from an MSI reseller in your country or a non MSi that has the same specs from ebay or other online source.

The MSI power adapters are the same worldwide, only the power cord part is different depending on the plug type in your area.

    http://www.gentechpc.com/product.asp?pf_id=Adapter-AC150

Even if your problem turns out not to be the AC Power Adapter it doesn't hurt to have an extra one.

Another option, since it's no longer covered by your 1 year warranty,is to take to to a reliable computer service center in your area to have it looked at and fixed.

    Where are you located?

MSI has authorized service centers worldwide.

All is probably not lost..... assuming you purchased from a reseller or vendor of the United States or Canada.

Your US model should still be covered by the warranty..... which should be a minimum of two years, and three years, if you applied for the1 year of added coverage offered for those with Intel Series 6 Chipsets.

Go HERE, and enter your model number (GT780), then select your specific model from the list. This will provide you with your warranty information, and instructions to begin the RMA process.

MSI Notebook 2 Year Limited Warranty Information

I would give this a try...... good luck!

I believe he said in a previous where he accidentally typed into the quote in post #3 that he's not from the US so like my non US GT780DX there's probably only a 1 year warranty on his unit that is now expired..

Starting with the GT70/60 models MSI Korea has changed to a 2 year domestic warranty with a 1 year Global Warranty.Sorry to say there's no Accidental Damage Warranty offered here.

I took advantage of an optional additional 2 years of warranty from my local reseller for $20 because it was ordered on the 1st day offered.

He indicated it was a US model, which I assume was purchased from a US dealer. The serial number and model number will both indicate if it's a US model. As such, he 'may' (depending on circumstances & situations we do not fully know) be able to get an RMA through the US service center. This may of course require he send it to a US MSI repair facility (which will appear on his RMA) as well, but this may be better than having no warranty at all. I am merely suggesting he look into this as an option. I have no idea where he is located or if added shipping cost will make this a feasible option..... but if it's a US model, purchased from a US dealer, he is eligible to obtain an RMA from the US service center. It's certainly worth exploring, and a call to US MSI Notebook Tech Support. Nowhere in the 2yr warranty do I see it stipulates the nationality or locaton of the owner...... only, "This limited warranty only covers the Product that is purchased in the United States and Canada" and "MSI will only cover the cost of shipping (within domestic) Notebook back to customer; customer is responsible for shipping the Notebook to MSI."

Yikes,I clearly missed that US model bit of info.

    Another senior moment.

So for warranty repairs he should contact the place he got the notebook from but shipping the whole notebook and adapter to the US from wherever he is can be costly.

I still think he should try to buy a power brick locally and see if that's the cause.

I believe batteries and power adapters are only covered for 1 year no matter where it's purchased?

Well once again, I am of the mind that we do not have enough information.

Yeah, the PA is 6 months, and the battery is 1 year. He should be able to have PA and battery tested locally, without actually purchasing them. It's really only guesswork on our parts, and if neither is needed, he may not be in a position for the added expense. Who knows?

If you have someone with an Acer laptop you could try plugging in a 95w or 120w adaptor with the right plug to see if it will charge the machine (just don't try to run the machine from the adapter).

If you determine that it's not the AC adapter nor battery, then it's potentially a thermal problem (if I understood correctly, then you played the game for 10 hours until the laptop shut down, yes?). Possibly a component - such as the GPU - over heated on account of extended use.

If it's just the battery or the adapter, then that is a much simpler fix.

This might prove useful once you have the card you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOW1t3PmsjU&feature=youtube_gdata

I'm not sure what that model is compatible with, but I "believe" you can upgrade it to - say, the 570m? It depends on the release of the model. As far as cost and where to buy, etailers (online retailers) will get you the best deal. A quick Google Shopping search will give you a ballpark. :)

Resellers that post on this forum have stated that the US MSI warranty is not voided by breaking the sticker.

Where did you get the info that the warranty was voided/

US products are covered by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Here in Seoul I've had several MSI notebooks serviced by the MSI notebook service center with broken or removed stickers.
