May I ask: why are those your options? And what laptop/motherboard is this for?

Based off what you have here, the better CPU is the 820qm. Although it has a lower clock speed than the 640m, it has more cache, support for 1333MHz memory, and can address more memory bandwidth.

1600MHz memory is faster, but with any of those CPUs, it will be downclocked to the fastest speed the processor can support, which is why I ask: why are those your options?

i7-640M is a dualcore CPU, whereas i7-820QM is a quadcore CPU. The 640M will run DDR3 RAM at 1066MHz; 820QM will run DDR3 RAM at 1333MHz.

    What he said. :D

You can overclock the memory all you want, OP. The CPU will not address the higher frequencies. :(

Also, to substantiate Marecki_clf's post: The 640M only has dual cores with up to 4 threads. The 820QM has 4 cores with up to 8 threads. Clock frequency aside, the 820QM has considerably more potential.

    Happy hunting!

820qm has a slightly faster turbo clock, and 2 more MB of cache. Other than those two things, they are the same. It's up to you if you want to spend $80 extra for such minor differences.
