    msi gt70 cpu temp 80 on idle!

    Hey guys
    this is a problem i've been suffering from for years now and it is only getting worse
    my cpu's temp - my cpu is the damned 4800mq - is way high. on idle it began to get to 60-70 after one year of purchasing the laptop
    it now sits between 70 to 85 on idle and maximum cpu load of 8%!
    i tried everything . i lowered the maximum power to 99% on power settings to disable turbo boast. the 4 cores sit always on 2600 HZ which means turbo boost is off. i tried undervolting the cpu till i got to -85 mv . i - for numerous times - repasted the cpu. i thoroughly cleaned the heatsinks every time. i used IC diamond and arctic silver 5 components for 5 times of repasting. i even bought a new cpu heatsink and tossed out the old one.nothing works!
    i am really desperate . and i don't know what to do else .
    so..what to do guys?

    Time to clean the dust bunnies out. It would also be beneficial to repaste as well.

    So if your not feeling confident in doing this yourself you can take it to any local repair shop and ask them nicely to do it for you.

    Else your going to need:

    Philips head screwdriver

    90+% isopropyl alcohol or TIM Cleaner

    Can of compressed air

    Coffee filters or some non-static lint free cloth

    A Brush

    Simply unscrew all the screws on the back cover and remove the cover.

    Then locate your battery and remove that (Always best to remove the laptop battery before working on anything inside)

    Now would be time to discharge yourself static wise touching something metal that's ground is ideal.

    Now locate your fan(s) followed by the fans wire. Once you find the fan wire and carefully remove it from the main board.

    With this done start unscrewing the fan from the system. Once your able to remove the fan do so carefully and place it down somewhere ready for cleaning.

    Now with the fan out of the way you should have access to the fin array of the laptop which might be blocked and this is where you have two paths you can go down, 1) clean the blockage without taking the heatsinks out or 2) removing the heatsinks giving them a good clean and replacing the thermal paste.

    If you choose path 1 simply remove any dust you can manually with you hand or brush, then simply shoot some compressed air from the inside of the system out so complete the dust removal that's between the fin array.

    If you choose path 2 simply unscrew and remove the heatsinks carefully as not to damage thermal pads and clean the copper area with the 90+% isopropyl alcohol and then do the same with the CPU and GPU just clean the die area on the CPU and GPU unless you can be careful around the very small area. Clean the heatsinks fin array they will normally be blocked with dust with the compressed air.

    Once you have done this simply apply some thermal paste on both the GPU and CPU most people will say grain of rice or a pea size blob, I use pea size blob method myself then simply replace the heatsinks.

    Now when screwing the heatsinks down make sure you do it in an X formation until all screw are tight. For example you start with screw 1 then 3 then 2 then 4 with two turns per screw till the screws will not move.

    Do the same on the CPU heatsink, then we she'll clean the fan with a brush or compressed air just make sure if your using compressed air to stop the fan from spinning. Once the fan is clean place it back into the laptop screw it down and put the cable back into the main board.

    Put the case on and flip it over then power the system on accordance and see if the temps have improved.

    I have the same laptop but with 4700mq and it sits at 45-50 on idle. On full load it can go up to 80°C while gaming heavily.

    Max 100% 80c is fine however if the CPU is doing this with only 8% load or idling which is the case as OP has stated then it's needs a clean and repaste.


    Edit: I have also just noticed OP stating heatsink has been replaced and using IC7 or artic thermal compound. So if that is the case then it's more then likely a contact problem.

    Double check that you have the heatsink mounted spot on. Is there any thermal paste on the heatsink after making contact with the CPU die???
