I'm all set to get the ms1039 but not sure whether to upgrade the hard drive from 5400rpm to 7200 rpm. Will the 7200rpm one give off more heat?

In most, if not all cases, yes, a 7200rpm drive will run hotter than a 5400rpm one, but not bymuch. Do you really need the extra transfer speed?

I have both an 80G 5400 & 7200 rpm hard drive (7200 mainly in the laptop, the 5400 is a backup). But I did try to put in the 5400 once out of curiosity regarding transfer speed and temperature:

No the 7200 rpm is not significantly hotter. +2C over the 5400 rpm does not bother me.

The 7200 rpm is approximately only 10-20% faster than the 5400rpm depending on what benchmark you use. Seek speed is definitely faster.

PS The 7200 rpm is a Hitachi Travelstar, the 5400 rpm is a Seagate Momentus OEM.
