Have you tried running in safe mode, keep pressing f8 as you notebook boots, though it sound like your hdd could be faulty , you could remove it and connect it to a desktop to save your data , also format and run hdd diagnostics.

But since you notebook is still in warranty, get it replaced if it is a hardware fault like faulty hdd.

Have you tried running scandisk for bad blocks on you hdd , you can down load dos 6.22 and burn a cd, once you know if your hdd is faulty or not.

do you have an external floppy drive?

Removing the hdd will not invalidate your warranty, I will see if i can find a cd based dos 6.22 disk with scandisk to check your hdd for errors.

You could try the trial version of hdd regenerator , it will at least tell you if your hdd is faulty.

If you know what make you hdd is you could try the manufactures website for a their hdd diagnostic software.
