Hello gentlemen. I'm planning to get a gt640 barebone(ms-1656 ID1) in the near future. I'm not sure I need all the power of the 720qm and 820qm. I was able to track down a 620m which appear to be on par with the 720qm and has a much lower TDP to boot. Does anyone know if that would work in a gt640?

I believe it will, if its i series 7 then i wouldn't see why they would change the slot for a dual core.

But i do approve of this move, 620m has amazing potential.

I think i5 will be great for general needs.

It's a given that with 32nm built, half-decent integrated GPU, as well as updated features like hardware encryption handling, that newer i5 makes older i7 quads look outdated from a tech point of view - not to mention i5 is easier on the battery, and employ more aggressive turbo bins.

Sure a i7 refresh later in the year would offer even more, but if you want what's available, that's also suitable, and is on market right NOW with decent value, going for dual is a nice choice.

Guys, I am certain it will not work, the 720m,820m and 920m uses the p55 chipset, while the 620m uses a different chipset.

A i7-620M might work in the GT640 (maybe needs an updated BIOS) but the IGP won't be usable.

Its not really down to the chipset in this case, theres also the hm55? or something of the gx740 (where did i pick this up?), just the socket and bios support, best bet would be to ask on the main MSI forum.

Also i5 is good, however not as efficient on the mobile market, it performs lower then the q9000 (if i recall) by alittle bit, but the i7-620m performs on par with the i 720?

Its that efficient, and probably costs generally less too.

We are powerhouses owners! We don't care about the "manure inside" IGPs from Intel. :D

It's fine if losing the IGP doesn't bother you in this case but for any type of user being able to get switchable graphics is always a benefit.

The i5 520M and/or 540M would actually a better bet than the i7 620M, according to notebookcheck's review. I wish there were more reviews to strengthen the data, but it seems the lower clocked/cached i5s perform almost as well as the 620M and 720QM, while consuming a lot less power and being cheaper.

Interesting, i'm fairly certain the i5 was scoring atleast 7k on vantage runs, where as 620/720 were both hitting 9k 10k most of the time, i'll try and pull up the benches again.
