    Good day to all.

    I need an advice as to which processor should I go for. I have gt683 and I am planning to upgrade my i5 processor to i7. I am torn between i7 2670qm OEM and i72760qm QS.

    Is it advisable to upgrade using Qualification sample procs? Does it have any pros and cons?

    Should I upgrade my power supply if I go with the said processors?

    Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card to gtx 570m or 580m?

    Thank you very much for the replies. :)

    2760qm QS CPUs will be the same stepping as retail (D2) and wont be significantly different, it will perform better.

    However selling QS CPUs is illegal and they do remain the property of Intel.

    This is ofc not true of OEM CPUs..

    I have found the 150W included is actually enough.

    You can upgrade the graphics to the 570M (which I did) and the 580M, though the 580M might need that bigger brick and also a slight hardware mod to provide more power.

    Be aware that the 570M and 580M have a different heatsink compared to the 560M which you would also need to source.

    It's fairly simple, its under the main cover, unscrew and remove the fan. Unscrew the 4 screws and slide the heatsink off. Unscrew the card and it will pop up. Remove the card.

    Place in the new card and pop some thermal paste on it (if the heatsink has none) and push it down/screw it in. Slide the new heatsink on it and secure the 4 screws. Replace the fan (remembering to plug it in!).

    Done.

    If you think you will have a need for VT-d (Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O) you would need to go with the 2760.

    @meaker

    ok thnx for the advice. but my problem would be the heatsink because you said that the gtx570m heatsink is different from that of the gtx 560m. do i need to make some modification or buy a specific heatsink.

    @koth

    i am using my laptop for gaming only. i just want to know if there is a significant boost in fps between the 2 procs thnx. also the prices are almost the same.

    Yes, that's what I was wondering. Is it really worth going with the 2760 over the 2670? What is the difference apart from the extra MHz?

    Vt-d and the mhz at stock and turbo. Also yes you need to buy the 570m heatsink.

    The other difference was that the 2760qm will do 1600mhz memory bus, although its been pointed out many times that although Intel say the 2670 will only do 1333mhz memory bus, it can actually do 1600mhz with no problems. Just throwing that in for the sake of completeness. :)

    Hmm, and from what I read the 2670 will only take 16gb of ram?

    That's true. Probably not going to be an issue for any laptop however, most people would find it very hard to justify even having 16GB :)

    The memory controller on the i7 2670QM in an MSI with HM67 will allow you to use up to 32GB,8GB x 4,of DDR3-1333 204 pin sodimms.

    Naturally you will need Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate sine Home Premium only supports up to 16GB.

    WhatsThePoint, yes you are correct about that. Intel's Ark contains outdated information and I'm no longer going to refer to it ;)
