i have a hard decision to make right now..
i bought gateway p-7805u for $1200 not too long ago. and as some of you might know, i bought one of limited early batch version that have 1920x1200 screen instead of 1440x900.

anyway, i recent found out that i can build really good msi laptop for $750
    specs are

intel dual core p-9600(which is superior to p8400 on gateway p-7805u)
    4gb ddr2 800mhz ram(gateway has 4gb ddr3 1066mhz)
    320gb 7200 rpm hdd(same for gateway)
    9600m gt(gateway has 9800m gts)
    15.4 inch 1680x1050 screen(gateway is 17 inch but it's whopping 9.2 lbs)
2 mega pixel webcam(vs 1.3 megapixel on gateway, so this wins)
    WiFi(same)

right now i can pretty much max out most console port game at steady 30+fps and crysis runs 50fps on medium setting 1440x900 on this gateway laptop. so this is good enough performance for laptop since i bought this laptop for gaming + cad use. but it's horribly big and heavy, not suitable for carrying around and i went $200 over my budget.
i am thinking about returning gateway and go with $750 msi laptop and keep it for an year till i save up enough money and when they release gtx 200 series gpu and quad cpu on laptop for around $1200(i am sure someone can pull that off next year).
what do you think? right now, i don't play heavy games but want to play street fighter iv when it comes out on pc. will 9600m gt good enough to run street fighter for at 1680x1050 resolution on medium or high setting? i also heard 9600m gt can run crysis on medium setting 30+ fps steady at 1280x800resolution. is this true?
benchmark-wise i get about 8700ish on 3d benchmark 06 without overclocking with gateway p-7805u. i checked notebook gpu review and they say 9600m gt is around 3800ish(p-8400 base non overclock).
does anyone have notebook with 9600m gt equipped and confirm gaming performance for me, please? =)
also how far can 9600m gt on msi 1651 barebone overclocked and how much performance boost will i get from it?

i hate to selling gateway but i recent spent $3200 on lasik surgery and i really think i should cut down my spend on pc.

the gateway forum sucks anyway, the people in there are mad immature thats why i dont even bother going in there.

you may want to search the gaming forum specifically for an in-depth answer.

Man you guys are mean. :p You guys have to remember many of the owners in there are pretty new with notebooks; give them some time to learn how to utilize the forum correctly and they'll be fine. The only problem I have with the Gateway section is that if you're not familiar with Gateway's line-up, you would have assumed that they only made the P-7811fx and P-7805u by just looking in there. Quite a shame, because their MC and MD notebooks are quite nice.

You should expect the 9600M GT to perform anywhere from 50-60% of what the 9800M GTS is capable of. I tried Crysis at 1280x720 with medium settings and the framerate usually hovers in the low 20's most of the game, with the exception of the cave level where it jumps into the 30's, or in the high teens with the snow levels. If you can live with some game settings turned down, the 9600M GT is a decent video card. One particular thing I like about the MS-1651 is that even when gaming, it runs cool and quiet. No cooling pad needed, but it always doesn't hurt.

Overclocking-wise, it's a matter of luck. I've some guys push the core clock up to 740 MHz, shader up to 1900 MHz, and memory to 1000 MHz (2000 MHz DDR). I only managed to squeeze 580/1600/900 out of mine. The jump in shader clock really helps out these cards, and the 9600M GT is no different. I've experience anywhere from a 5-10 FPS increase overclocked, pending on game.

Search for 'MS 1651' on eBay.

You are right though, the MC and MD notebooks rule. Gateway needs to work on there audio systems/speakers if they did that they'd have pretty much flawless offerings. I hope the MC gets updated soon with the new 4000 series GPU :D

I ran 3DMK06 on the MS-1722 today. System consists of P9500, 2X2GB DDR2-800 7-7-7 Gskill Ram and of course, 9600m GT. Everything stock and Nvidia's latest notebook driver yielded a score of 5313. For comparison, my P-7805u stock ran just over 8700 with same driver. This is just standard 3D Mark, no changes to default settings of anything.

As an Aside, I looked back at some of my older scores and this 9600m GT scores about 500 lower than my desktop did 2.5 years ago, 3800 X2 and X1900XTX. It also scores about a 1000 points less than my first C2D E6400 with X1900XTX from the fall of '06. Guess it's a good thing that I still play the same games I did 2 years ago. :D

if you're playing source games, the 9600 gt should suffice. the only reason that I bought the gateway is that because it was the cheapest laptop when my Compal broke down on christmas day

lol, not that it matters much but I misquoted the ram timings, should have been 5-5-5. What was in this post is for DDR3 in a different notebook.
