i bought 640 from j&r a couple weeks ago. i really have no problems so far. but i am curious for future purposes, what components can i upgrade. for example, can i put an SSD, add memory. what about the processor and gpu. actually, the gpu is fine cause i'm getting serious overclocks. but as far as the cpu, can i upgrade the i5 to an i7 and if so how would i go about it? thanks

Yes, You can upgrade i5 to i7. It's not very complicated. You just need to take the bottom cover off, take out the cooling fan, take out the heatsinks, swap the CPUs, reapply thermal paste on the heatsinks, put them back on, put back the cooling fan, put back the bottom cover. Done! :)

    PS.
Maybe try also updating the BIOS to the latest one before doing all the above.

thanks for the info. i've replaced desktop cpu's for many years, but i must admit im a bit skeptical of messing around with mobile ones and voiding the warranty.

As long as you put the old CPU back, MSI shouldn't care about warranty as there are no "Warranty Void if Removed" stickers anywhere inside that I have seen.

This is a "bare-bones" notebook so its meant to be tinkered and opened by the end user.

As far as notebook upgrading goes, the GX640 is one of the easier ones I've come across. Removing the main panel gives you access to the cpu, gpu, ram, and wifi right away. I do believe any of the mobile i7's should work fine. The one thing to note is that the heatsink assembly covers both cpu and gpu, so make sure to get all the screws out. So far I've done the copper shim mod, and replaced the stock wifi with an Intel N6300 card. Eventually I'd like to move to SSD.

Do you know if the cpu socket of gx640-098us with 430m is PGA988, the same for the one with i7 720qm? If so, I can put in any production core i7's like 720qm, 820qm?

yes the gx640's chipset supports all i5's and i7's. Both cpu's have the same socket so in most enthusiast laptops they will be compatible

it may be possible depending on the mxm slot. Im sure msi uses the ref cards unlike asus so it wud be easier, however upgrading laptop video cards are expensive and not worth the money at all.
