I just got a new gx640 sent to me because the last one had problems, and the microphone also doesnt work in this one..
It shows that its activated in windows settings, but I have to tap it hard directly for the audio bar to barely budge.. and then the tapping is barely heard if recorded
what am i doing wrong?
also the windows 7 logo when starting up is distorted for like half a sec then back to normal... just like the on the previous laptop.. so umm.. same question for this one.

Have you tried playing with the microphone boost. It can be found in the Realtek Audio Manager, Microphone Section, little icon next to the speaker on the Recording Volume line. Without boost, you can't hear anything from my mic either. As far as the Windows 7 logo, can you post a pic of the problem. Not sure what you mean by distorted.

As for the logo, not sure how I can take a pic of that, will try to record it with a cam but not sure if a cam with like 20 fps can catch the brief distortion -

Agree with Ayle, if you do any Skype or other video conferencing, webcam stuff, a dedicated mic is the best bet. Also, have you installed the latest VBIOS from MSI?

So I finally played around with this and, indeed, I can't get my internal mic to work, either. It works so badly, though, that I can't help but think that there has to be a fix somewhere (and that it's not just a poorly made microphone). I can't figure out why it records any tap that I make on the chassis, but records no voice or external sound at all.
To the OP (or anyone):
1) have you uninstalled Realtek drivers to see whether they are conflicting with the mic?
2) have you gone inside the chassis to see what the mic looks like and how it fits against the little "mic" opening on the palmrest? -
You can see the underside of the mic in section 8-8 of the disassembly guide here:
