So I heard that at times the system can hit its 180w limit which would prevent limit some overclocking headroom.
I plan to get a 3940xm (yes I know it doesn't help with gaming) and I figure this would cause it to hit that limit easy, especially if the gpu is also overclocked.

My question is is there a higher wattage gpu that is outright compatible with this system, or does a different adapter have to be wired differently to work.

You have to take a different PSU like the 240W slim dell and mod the cable.

It's mostly overclocking the GPU that causes issues.

I suppose there is no where to buy such psus already moded.

It does help in gaming with CPU-dependent games such as Starcraft 2 and Skyrim.
You have Hybrid Power which is 50W from the battery pack to aid the 180W AC adapter.

MSI has capped the system so even when you have a 220W AC adapter the system will still drain 180W through the DC jack.

Is that so? Is there no way to remove that cap? I feel that something like that cripples the point of a laptop like this. Also I thought that battery power thing was only for the newer gt 70s not my 2012 gt 54something

This does not apply to the 3rd generation machines. You will want the beta EC for the 3rd generation machines from the MSI forum.

Are the beta ones the 50x ones? I googled beta Ec for the gt70 and on the topic for it it linked me to that bios page.

Well some games are paying better. I know I pretty much turned this into a million questions thread but I had a rather annoying issue...

Why does my afterburner look like this and why does this laptop/gpu not overclock on demand like any other gaming laptop I have had?

Afterburner doesn't support mobile cards so it's pure luck if it happens to work. In your case it's misbehaving badly, on my GT70/680M it mostly works - monitoring often causes memory leaks freezing the laptop. GPU boost (v1.0) doesn't do too much. On some other brands it raises 719 to 758 MHz. On my GT70 I never checked when it was brand new with the original drivers. Later, on Win8 I measured default 771 MHz and no boost. Then, when VGA OC was launched, 771 MHz again but memory rose up to 1854. And without VGA OC GPU drops to 758. Now on Win 8.1 VGA OC doesn't raise the memory speed anymore.

I've never had any issues with afterburner personally, it will usually allow to the limit programmed in on the card.

However if you are having issues nvidia inspector is a good alternative.

It looks fine with the basic CPU/VRAM frequency adjustment, power limit isn't available probably because AB doesn't fully support this particular mGPU yet.

Hmm...I see. I just know from other optimus laptops msi afterburner always worked perfectly, and same with my 7970m sager. Enduro just sucked. I have not tried my luck too much on windows 8.1. When I updated to it my msi laptop went totally haywire. I will stick to plain 8 for now..

I did report a couple of times the problems on AB to Unwinder, the programmer and got the usual "friendly" answers... :mad2:

So in almost every game I play, I get drops to 0% gpu usage causing the game to freeze for an instant. Does anyone know this issue? I have sadly had nothing but problems with this laptop T-T Enduro was easier to deal with.

Edit: I feel like there is just a problem with my gpu. Might explain the AB stuff too...

There are just a few people in the firmware scene that have an embedded hatred for mobile chips, it was the same in some other places.
