good day! ive bought this laptop last year and now im planning to upgrade its cpu and gpu sometime this year but ill do the gpu upgrade first. can i fit a gtx 460m in this laptop? if not, what are my other options that is better than the gts 160m? thanks in advance!

No the 460m can not fit (different socket, MXM 3.0 tybe B VS MXM 2.1 type III).
The best would probably be the alienware version of the ATI mobility 4850 with 1gb vram.
Another option would be a 280m or 260m.
FX 3700m is also an option, but not much of an upgrade because it's really hot. -
The nVidia's maybe too hot for this little chassis. If you find a 4850 Don't hesitate. (If you find a crossfireX setup give me a pm.)

@moral hazard
thanks for the info. how big is the performance jump from gts 160m to 4850m? -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Your 3d mark vantage score could almost double.
-
hmm.. did a quick search in notebook check and the performance jump is quite high. now the problem is where can i get an alienware hd 4850m and how much it will cost.
-
Mxm-upgrade has the GX620 upgraded with a 4650. Of course, the 4850 is a much more powerful card, but the guide will give you an idea of what's involved (not much really). I believe the GX620 have the same exact heatsink as well.

You can also put a Quadro 3700 or GTX 280m. There's one on e-bay right now at a good price. It's basically the same as the 280m but with a different vbios which you can flash to make it operate essentially like a 280m. The main difference is the quadro is a 65nm card while the 280m is 55nm so it will run cooler than the quadro. Here's the e-bay link. The seller even states that it's compatible with the GT627, so it should work in the GT628 as the heatsinks and MXM interface are the same.

EDIT: Didn't realize Moral_Hazard already mentioned the quadro, and the possibility of heat issues. Sorry about that....Oh wow this was my 666th post...The Number of the Beast baby!!! For all you Maiden fans out there! Up the Irons!

The heatsink is different in the GX620.
Because it has a type II card stock and the GT628 has a type III card stock.
Anyway, you don't have to worry about that, your heatsink is the good one. -
i did a search again while taking a break from work. looks like the fx 3700/gtx 280m is my only option here since finding an hd 4850m is really hard.
ill do some reading at the MSI GT627 (1651), works with FX 3700m thread and continue posting my inquiries there. thank you very much moral hazard for the information you posted (+ rep to you) and thanks kosti for the ebay link. -
Aww man, I was in the NBR marketplace a little while ago and it looks like you just missed Marecki's 4850. I think he sold it for $100 which is an awesome deal.

I think he sold it for 200$ and I eventually got it for the same price.
The problem is it only works on the built in display of the gx720, not the gx620 or clevo m570tu... thats the Alienware version I think... Should I flash the MSI card with the alienware VBIOS to get it to work?
I dunno if its a good idea -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
So you have tested it with your GX620?
BTW did you get a chance to test the Q9200 in it yet? -
-
wow that really is a good deal. anyway im kinda reviewing my options again. i just recently found out that some stores here in my country are selling gx660 for for a good price so im thinking of selling this laptop then save up a bit and get that instead. anyway again thank you very much for the input guys.

I have heard of it not working in the same way on the gx620, don't have mine yet, on the m570tu it posts on an external monitor through DVI only.
...thinking about trying it in my gx630 but would probably have the same result. -
i am thinking about upgrading too. and i need your guys suggestion
i am using bone MS 1651 / GT628 / Force 3551. as already suggested on 1st page, fx3700 will increase significant temperature. also flash bios... well, on other thread user idiotpilot, using exact same laptop, tried to port hd4850 but hit the wall b/c driver issue :
http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/528871-hd4850-ms-1651-gx620-6.html
so, if i opt gtx 280M would it be easier ? as i am not really familiar with flash vbios, etc or even blind flash scenario, i want to opt easiest way possible with any compatible card(s). also, if gtx 280M will fit into this, what about gtx 285M ? possibly excessive heat & power consumption issue ? i tried google about this but no clue. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
GTX 285m came only as mxm 3.0 type B.
Your slot if MXM 2.1 type III. The GTX 280m is the best nvidia card you can get (you wont need to mod the heatsink to get it to fit, at least I dont think you need to).
Heat is still going to be bad, this notebook only has one fan... -
thanx moral.. no hardware mod needed is a really good news. indeed, heat will be an issue b/c only single fan, but i think it wont be as bad as if i use fx3700. how about vbios & power consumption ? will it need to flash & bigger power brick ?
performance wise : based on notebookcheck's Comparison of GPUs, i can expect about 40% up with 280M on 3DMark Vantage ... really close to hd4850. -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Is your power brick 120W?
I don't think you will need to flash the vbios, but I'm not 100% sure. -
power supply output is 19v ~ 6.3A, so it's about 120w
under what situation do i need to flash vbios ? i really need good details walk through about this swapping -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Your CPU I'm guessing is 45W + the GPU is 75W so it's near the limit of your PSU I think.
I don't know under what situation you would need to flash the vbios, I don't have a 280m to test... -
no reliable reference : that's true..
anyway, i can't find gtx 280m for around $ 200.. this is too much..
