I have a msi 1722 notebook and the esata external port does not recognize any esata drives that I hook up to it. I have all the current drivers and just updated the bios to 1.0z and ec build to 4.3. When I turn on the acpi throught the bios the system will reboot after trying to load system 7. Any suggestions, also when I go into the bios it says that there is no esata available, is there a chip or board that I need to install to have this as I can't find it on msi's web site.

    Thanks

You must have the USB connected to, this will give the device power.
The e-sata port is only for the connection, so just plug-in the USB cable and all will work.
AHCI enabled in the BIOS will give you more performance, this must be disabled when installed Windows XP with default drivers and not when loading Intel drivers.

I have tried 3 different esata external drives, 2 of them with their own power supplies and one powered with the usb port of the notebook. Drives work just fine with my desktop but when they are plugged into the notebook the drive will not mount

If you install windows then change achi settings, it crashed (it does with xp anyway) so you have to use the same acpi setting you started with.

Other then that, anything happening in dev manager.

I have the AHCI turned off because with it on the system reboots after trying to load windows 7. It did the same with Vista also. The usb part of the esata port works just fine. When I go into the bios it says that there is no esata available or I can just set it to auto but not select it.

ACPI or AHCI? They are two completely separate things...

For windows Vista & Windows 7 32/64bit AHCI enabled.
For Windows XP default setup AHCI disabled, setup with Intel AHCI driver support which must be installed trough USB floppy disk or slipstream within the Windows XP install image AHCI can be enabled.
For Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7 Install the Intel Matrix Storage manager driver/software only when you are not using the Intel Turbo Memory Module.
When using the Intel Turbo Memory Module install only the Intel Turbo Memory driver/software.
For more details about the Intel driver check www.intel.com
E-SATA device much use external power, by power adapter or trough the USB port located next to the E-SATA port.
E-SATA will not power the device when it's only connected with the E-SATA cable.

Hello, I have downloaded the intel drivers for Windows 7 the Intel Matrix Storage manager driver/software that you recommended but when I try to run them the progam says that it is not compatable with this computer and it is the correct version for system 7. Also if I enable the AHCI from the bios the system will start up but keeps rebooting before loading windows 7. I am running the 32 bit version of system 7 and my system is the 1722 id 2 system from msi. I also know about the power issue for esata drives, that they require either an external power supply or use of the usb port to power the drive.

Just to ask ... all of you who provide possible solutions ... do you use the latest BIOS and Firmware versions (1.0z and 4.3) as stated by pcbosis? Because I'm using Windows 7 x64 but I haven't still updated my firmware and BIOS to the latest ones. As it is now I don't have any problems with eSATA drives. So I'm thinking that there might be some problem with latest BIOS edition???

Depending on the MS-1722 ID version I am using the latest BIOS and EC Firmware version and no issue/problem found or detected.
    Everything is working fine.

    BIOS version 1.0Z whitebook version
EC Firmware version 4.30 whitebook version.
BIOS is set to default, AHCI is enabled.

If AHCI is disabled and Windows is installed, then don't enable this just in the BIOS or the system will keep rebooting when loading Windows. (windows XP)
My advise is to enable it in the BIOS and then run the Windows setup, follow my advise for installing the Intel drivers and the Intel Matrix Storage Manager as mentioned earlier.

I am reinstalling windows 7 with the ahci turned on to see if that will solve the problem, but I could not find the Intel Matrix Storage Manager that would work with my computer, it kept saying not compatable, it you could lead me to the proper url for it. Thanks
