    Hey Forum readers,

I have a MSI GT780R and I would like to have Windows 7 Ultimate on my computer instead of the pre-installed MSI Windows.
So I put a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD in my laptop and almost completely finished the install (many, many times) and when it's restarting to finish the last part,
    I get the error:
"Windows Setup could not configuere Windows to run on this computer's hardware"

    Side info and MSI rage
So I asked the laptop service in Holland how to solve this.
*Be prepared I try to hold my anger and dissatisfaction, but I can't hide it all*
The Laptop service of MSI is really horrible and knowledgeable in my experience with asking technical advice.
I tried to reinstall the MSI Windows from the Harddrive, but I encountered a stupid design mistake.
The F3 repair function requires that the Drive's label is called "OS_Install" which was gone by changing partitions.
For more info and the solution to this problem: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...abel-not-os_install-solution.html#post8787253.

The reply of the MSI service was summarized (after many emails):
    - You broke down the partition with the MSI Windows <-- Unrelated, I used a DVD still got the error. (Also a legal Windows 7 Home you could download)
    - I asked how do I install another Windows when I got the error: "Windows Setup could not configuere Windows to run on this computer's hardware" --> You damaged a working laptop we can repair it for you for €35.
    - I just want to know how to install another version of Windows, I can still install the original MSI Windows if you tell me how to change the Drive's label out of Windows ( I discovered it myself with a lot of searching and luck) --> If you want to send your laptop for re-installation it will cost you money.
*So my answers and questions are ignored...*

So seeing that it was going nowhere with this service, I will try to ask you. Or if you know what part of MSI I could contact to complain about this and get real technical advice, that would be appreciated :)

    The question
I still want to install another version of Windows (Windows 7 Ultimate), does someone has experience with the error:
"Windows Setup could not configuere Windows to run on this computer's hardware"?

I have looked trough the internet for a solution and found a bit of useful information.
It seems that the error is because of the combination of having a raid configuration and Intel rapid storage technique.
So maby installing Intel rapid storage drivers with the installation of Windows could solve this, but the drivers I found wouldn't show up.
Or what I just said is completely irrelevant.

    My specs:
    MSI GT780R
    CPU: Intel Core i7 2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz
    VGA: NVIDIA GTX 560M
    RAM: DDRIII 8GB
HDD: 1.5 TB (2x 750GB RAID 0 Seagate (by a repair they changed the Western Digital to Seagate :( )

    Thanks in advance,
    NumesSanguis

You originally didn't the DVD, if you were just upgrading. Only the product key is needed and then you initiate the install via windows anytime upgrade utility. What exactly are you attempting to do? Are you trying wipe and perform a clean installation? Was the option for an upgrade greyed out when you first started the install with disc?

I also tried the Windows anytime upgrade, I forgot to mention, but this would give something like: Your Windows is not compatible for this update to a better Windows. It seems it doesn't work for the MSI version of Windows.

That's odd? I went from the default home premium x64 to pro x64 just fine with the anytime upgrade. Maybe your key is a 32bit version?

I'm pretty sure I know your problem. If your drives are in raid 0, then you need to install the Intel raid driver before you start installing windows. When you are installing windows there should be something like load drivers. You need to put the driver on a flash drive in a folder and it should find it. You should be able to find out what driver you need by googling it.

Look into your specification, I find one issue may help you to solve the problem.

You have Raid O on 2 hard drives. You shall go to Bios to disable the Raid O, then try to install your Windows again.

Let me know if you solve the issue or not?

No it's x64, but the MSI Windows probably has some extra or custom stuff with it. I think that's why it doesn't work to upgrade to a normal Windows 7 Ultimate.

That's what I found too, so I thought I found the correct drivers, but they didn't show up when I selected load drivers. Probably I got the wrong drivers, but don't know which one I need then. If MSI could tell me which drivers, it would be nice.

This probably would solve it, but for 2 (and now 3) reasons I don't want to do this.
    1) I will lose the MSI Windows on the hardrive, because the file is spread over the 2 HD.
    2) Won't I lose the extra speed of RAID 0 if Windows is only installed on 1 HD?
    (3) I now have the MSI Windows installed, so it would be a pain in the :p)

If I have made a recovery disc and I'm going to try to install it again, I will post here if it worked.

On the other forum they said that Windows 7 with SP1 probably will solve this problem, if I have tried that, I will post it here.
But that can be weeks, but also months or years.

What are you talking about? Sp1 is already packaged with windows 7. And I don't see why the raid drivers/configuration would prevent you from upgrading? You should call Microsoft and ask why your key is not working with the anytime upgrade. When boot from the disc, is the upgrade option greyed out?

Any raid will put windows across 2 drives. Period. You could break the raid, but would sacrifice the speed of raid 0. Look at it this way, when windows loads up it basically becomes a "single" drive. Windows does not know the difference, and any functionality will work the same. So, in your scenario, you pretty much just want to upgrade to ultimate right? And not lose anything? Where did you purchase your windows 7 ultimate upgrade from?

For some reason I had to put the driver files in a folder on my flash drive before it would recognize them. Here is the link to the raid drivers(I think) http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...Storage+Technology+(Intel®+RST)&lang=eng#help

    @js042507
The Windows 7 Ultimate I have is from the start period of Windows 7. At that time SP1 wasn't even released that's why SP1 is not included.
It's not the raid drivers/configuration that's preventing me from upgrading, but the special MSI version of Windows can't be upgrade with a normal Windows 7 ultimate cd. When you try to upgrade in the MSI Windows to Ultimate you get the following error:

    Install Windows
    Compatibility Report
Windows 7 Home Premium cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You'll need to reinstall any program using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select "Custom (advanced)".

The raid drivers/configuration prevent me from trying to install Windows 7 on AHCI, because only 1 HDD is shown with the installation and I'm afraid I will lose the Windows on the hard drive's itself. I don't have a recovery disc yet.
Windows sees is just as 1 drive, but because it is physically on 1 hard drive, won't it be slower then when you have installed it on 2 physical hard drives? That's the purpose of RAID 0.
When you put Windows on AHCI the RAID screen is skipped too, so you won't have RAID at the time of installing.
